Have you ever been to the Caribbean? Doesn't sound like it. A huge portion of the Caribbean is nothing like the USA.

And to pretend visiting different European countries is a similar cultural experience as visiting the Caribbean countries is the height of illusion. There are 7000 islands in the 28 Caribbean nations and many are quite different. They speak different languages, eat different food and their culture is totally different from the USA.

BTW, millions of people go to Paris and London and think they have seen culture different from NYC. They are delusional.

To go to uk and France but end up only seeing London and Paris itself is very provincial. It is like visiting Manhatten then claiming to have see the USA.

This is true, but it's what a huge number of travellers do.

The opposite is also true. Without seeing Manhattan or Disney World or San Francisco or Los Angeles, a tourist cannot claim that he / she has seen USA. They are Top Tourist draws.
Same way no visit to England or France is complete without seeing London and Paris.

i love to travel overseas--and have. But with R/T airfare to Europe now around $1600, I'm limited by how often I can go.

There is no way that it should cost that much, especially with the low cost carriers that fly from the Mid-Atlantic to Europe (Wow and Norwegian) if that is where you still are. I often see fares on larger airlines for around the 500-700, so even factoring in additional costs to get to get to bigger hubs like DC or New York, you should come in well under 1600. Also you should consider flying into a city that you may not be as interested in and then traveling to the places you are more interested in since between European low cost carriers and good train service, traveling within Europe is very inexpensive.

Check this out;

Low-Cost Airlines Revolutionizing Transatlantic Travel*|*College Tourist

Recently we flew from the UK to NYC using a 'budget' business class carrier called La Compagnie;

https://www.lacompagnie.com/uk

The biggest downside for us was that it uses Luton airport, which frankly is a dump. Oh, and although we had no problems with flights being on time, there have been reports of it being cancelled at short notice.

The aircraft was barely a third full, and coming back we had the entire rear section to ourselves! If it continues like that it won't be long before it folds.

Do Washington DC and Chicago count?

I wonder what percentage of Americans have seen New York, Disney World, SF and LA?
