My friend and I just took a trip to Peru that we completely planned ourselves. Originally we were looking into tours, but we wanted more than just a daytrip to Machu Picchu which was difficult. Out of curiosity I priced out some of the things we wanted to do and realized that, if I wanted to, I could have just booked our entire trip by myself that day if I wanted to for far less than the tours we had found. We were also able to hit 3 of our desired 4 places, instead of 2 like the tours offered. Lots of Google searches, TripAdviser reviews, HostelBooker reviews, and Travelocity searches later, we had a 12-day trip taking us to the Amazon rainforest near Puerto Maldonado, several days in Cuzco, 2 days at Machu Picchu, and 2 days near Lake Titicaca. After we got back we added up all of our expenses (including airfare, taxis, food, and souveneirs) and the total came to about $2000 per person. Not bad considering that a lot of tours we saw cost at least that, plus international and domestic airfare.
In recent years my travel planning has begun with internet searches then I hit the books. I prefer Rough Guides, Lonely Planet, & Rick Steves. Lonely Planet has an excellent forum. Their are almost as many and helpful users there as on City-Data forums! It is called the Thorn Tree Travel Forum here is the link: Thorn Tree travel forum - Lonely Planet
My dream vacation? There are a few but I'll share one 'dream' with you. Remember, its just a dream, but...
New Orleans. I wanna see what all the fuss is about.
I live 30 minutes outside New Orleans and am still wondering what all the fuss is about. I know some people love it, but I just don't see the big deal. To me New Orleans seems rundown and dirty.
One of my dream vacations would be to complete my visit of all 50 states. Start off in Boston, then slowly make my way west by car to Seattle (most of the states I've yet to visit are up north...I'm at 34 so far). Once in Seattle, I'd take a cruise to Alaska. When back, hop a flight to Hawaii to complete my trip. I have no clue how long it would take me, but I'm guessing over 6 weeks. Wish I could make it happen....
I just want to get in the car and drive for at least a month. After two weeks I usually change my mind about that.
I once rented a car for 3 weeks with no real agenda as to where I wanted to go. I ended up trying to go too far. 12 days and 3000 miles later I turned in the car. Did have a lot of fun though. Once I decided which direction to head, I only planned of spending 1 day driving accross New Mexico. Ended up spending 7 days driving all over New Mexico.
We're taking a Royal Caribbean cruise in the Mediterranean for our honeymoon. Our ship leaves from Barcelona, Spain and stops at Nice, France, Rome, Italy, Split, Croatia, then Athens, Greece
I need to return to New Zealand and attempt a re-do of what I first planned over 10 years ago, which is to get to Queenstown, and Milford Sound.
