What about Amtrak?
Or are you not traveling from Northern California?
I'm coming from Dallas.

I don't know if I should do the whole Flight + Hotel + Car thing, or just book each separately.

I heard that Expedia et al will give you discounts if you book all-three-in-one packages- I just don't want to end up with a moment.

Don't know your age, but we used AARP to book our flight to Europe 4 years ago. Saved us a chunk of change. If you're not flying soon, check the prices every day. that's how fast most of them change.

In years of looking for cheap hotels, flights and rental cars, there is NO ONE place where you can go that will ALWAYS get you the BEST price. Not Kayak, not Southwest.com, not Expedia.

My contribution to this discussion will be airfarewatchdog.com. Head to that website and enter your favorite airports to fly out of. Two or three times a week, they will post all of the airfare deals for that airport (as well as all regional airports within one hundred miles). It is a great resource for finding deals originating oin smaller regional airports like South Bend and Rockford.

For deals on rental cars, the rental car deals can be found at Fatwallet.com.

That is a great idea. Check early, check often because rates change that frequently.

One advantage of using an airline like Southwest is that you can book a flight abd rebook as the fares go down WITHOUT ANY FEES.
