It's no longer "off the beaten path". It's really become the new in-place for the European jet set crowd, kind of a closer version of Fiji and Tahiti with some very expensive resort/over-the-ocean type accomodations popping up like crazy.

HOWEVER...Air Asia is a budget airline out of Malaysia, which basically connects a ton of Asian destination at low prices. I bought my ticket over to Mauritius through Air Asia.
If they weren't offering such ridiculous low airfare, I wouldn't be going to Mauritius myself.
Unique wildlife (especially birds). Mauritius is where the dodo used to live, and there are several other species of birds there that are found nowhere else.
