Anyone here who drove to Seattle from the Midwest? In December? Which route would you prefer across the Rockies - I-90W, I-80W, or I-70W? Pros and cons? I've already read so many pages of different comments (that I got a headache!), I'd appreciate to hear from someone who actually did it. I know the timing isn't the best, but such are the circumstances... Please share your experience! Thank you
As I think I have posted previously, all Interstate routes in the US can be either problem-free, or problem-matic, depending on the weather. I prefer "weather.com", (which is The Weather Channel), for good information.
The liklihood of running into road-closing conditions on this route is actually not high.
So, without giving you a headache, if it were me, and I have done quite a bit of cross-country interstate travel I would take this route to maximize odds-on good conditions:
I-74 up to I-70 all the way to Denver. Probably will be a breeze, unless you hit a major winter storm. Then, check the forecast, and your most likely route would be I-25 north from Denver to I-80 in Wyoming. West from there, and from Salt Lake northwest on I-84 to Hermiston, OR. Again, check the conditions, and either continue I-84 to Portland, then I-5 north to Seattle, or if things are looking clear, take I-82 from Hermiston right up to I-90 and straight shot into Seattle. The key is road reports, and there are various resources, on the net, and via phone to get those. I always check ahead, it can save hours, or even days! The most harrowing part can be I-80 in Wyoming, not because of heavy snow, but because of blowing and drifting snow that can accumulate of the freeway and surprise the heck out of even the most experienced drivers!

Watch the weather channel a few days before you leave and then plan your route accordingly, otherwise my crystal ball isn't working right now.
