I've gone whale watching from the ports around Los Angeles numerous times, and have always seen whales while on these trips. Many whales migrate south in the winter, and winter in the areas between southern California and South America. Your chances of seeing whales is very high, and also fairly high that the weather will be good. Most California storms seem to come between January and April, though there's a possibility you'll have one while you're here in December.
Will you be spending much time in the San Diego area? If so, you might want to look into the "Go San Diego" card if you plan to do a lot of the typical tourist stuff. It provides moderate discounts for many of the tourist attractions around San Diego, but you have to plan ahead to maximize the card's value. You can find out about it by searching online for it. I found that it worked best if I planned to use it three (or more) times a day, but some days I only used it twice. It was still a better value than purchasing separate admissions to the places I wanted to see.
Location: Big Island- Hawaii, AK, WA where the whales are!

Uhmm just getting into the whale watching and learning the times and routes. Am I right your talking about Grey Whales??? or humpbacks going to Mexico. Aren't the humpbacks going to Mexico already there Christmas?
I followed the humpbacks from Hawaii to Alaska this year. (Went for other things also) but man the Humpbacks are incredible. Also saw Minke, Orca and Bulega in Alsaka. Lived in WA for years and last March saw my first grey whales from shore because the ocean was calm. Seen some incredible performances in past of the Orcas. I know the humpbacks have just been spotted in Maui! Whahoo they didn't show up to Big Island till last Jan.
Have a great trip and hope you get to see them it is a site to behold!! Bring a polarized binoclur if you can!!
I'm a native of San Diego.
Have a GREAT time. Please, just don't call it "Cali" out loud. Screams "Hellllo I'm a tourist". Thanks.
Umm, she is a tourist. I don't get why it's so bad to be a tourist. I travel all the time, therefore I am a tourist. I don't try to pretend I'm a local in any of the states/countries I visit.
And call it Cali all you want. The people here in SD are so stuck up when it comes to certain things, but given you're only here for a week, you might not notice. We moved from NJ a little over a year ago and let me tell you, it's like living in the Twilight Zone!
