The question's in the title. Whenever I went on a vacation, for some reason I never brought anything back. I took LOTS of pictures though, would that count????
i know some who love collecting the tacky cheap souveneirs and have a pretty interesting display of them - i know some who like to pick up something small that helps them remember the area - I know some who take pictures - some who journal, sometimes when drunk late night in a pub and just writing drunken observations
Personally, we typically will take some photos to help with the memories as well as pick up a magnet or a christmas ornament ... we really like the ornaments as it allows us to think about the travels yearly as we break them out of the box and put them on the tree
I don't always bring back souvenirs. I never do just for the sake of bringing something back. On my last trip I picked up some jewelry made of Murano glass and a couple of silk scarves.
I tend to do more photos than souveniers. Reason is, the souveniers have piled up after years and years of travel, and I have boxes of junk I have picked up from my travels. Most of it eventually ends up on Ebay or in a yardsale.
Being into photography, I take photos anyway and the photos in the albums are something that will always make a great souvenier.
I prefer photos to souvenirs, photos I do NOT have to move and dust constantly, I don't have little knickknacky things anyway because if I don't have them in our home I do not have to move and dust them constantly.
I like to get something as a souvenir -- a small ash tray, vase or knickknack that's not too tacky. I'm big on photography. In fact, many of my vacations could be more appropriately called photo excursions, but one little item to bring back the memories of a place is nice.
I think for most people photos are souvenirs these days but sometimes it is nice to bring back a physical souvenir if you find something you really like or is useful to you or you are adding to a collection that you already have.

yes that's me as well all though I stick to shot glasses....cheap..easy to bring back..and have them on a shelf in china cabinet
I always bring back the obligatory T-shirt(s). I have a few knic-nacks, many are in a box or drawer. My other 1/2 has a thing for fridge magnets. I tolerate them, but could do without.
So I guess skip the souvenirs!
