Nope, not weird at all. I did it all the time before I was married and without a cell phone.
In fact, I got stranded on an island (Mauritius) with no credit cards for a whole week! Fortunately it was the airline's fault so they put me up in a hotel with 2 large meals included and it was on the beach!
The main advantage of travelling solo is that you can set your own agenda without having to compromise. The main disadvantage is that you may have no one to share the experience with.
When I travel with others, sometimes I wish I were alone and vice versa.
Possibly the most popular place for solo travelers is up the road from you in Las Vegas. Besides the gaming attractions that keep people occupied, the atmosphere is such that you can make "instant friends" if you're a reasonably friendly, outgoing person.
I love traveling alone, you can do whatever you want!!!
I've done NYC, Boston, New England, New Orleans, Sweden, Finland, Venice, Norway, Finland, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Greece, France, Germany, etc.
It's a blast! If you want to sleep during the day, just do it. If you want to sit on a random bench for an hour and people watch, just do it. If you want to drink two bottles of wine and watch Italian reality shows wasted, do it (did that one last summer, haha).
What about hiking alone? I agree with everyone that traveling alone seems nice & relaxing, but if I went somwhere, I'd want to do alot of hiking - & that's kind of dangerous alone! Plus with my sense of direction (ie NONE! ) I'd be afraid of getting lost! To the poster who did the Grand Canyon alone, how did you do it? I'm thinking of Death Valley - is this dangerous to hike alone? Do places like that have guided tours?
Thanks guys!
I've traveled alone a lot, and have enjoyed it...oh yes, there were times when I wished I'd had a partner to marvel at the beauty, but wasn't unhappy or lonely...it was great! You simply must be cautious and stay where there are people...let family know where your going....where you plan on staying, keep an open line of communication with home.
I traveled to the Bahamas several times alone and did well....
Go for it! I've traveled alone since I was 20. Im 25 now and remember when people my age thought I was crazy. Ive had so much fun because like mentioned, you can do what you want.
Obviously, there are times when you wish you could have someone to enjoy it with, but you get over it and feel better when your friends back home say "I shouldve gone".
My family wants me to go with somebody to Europe. But I told them no. According to them it isn't safe? But I told them this is Europe! Where there are going to be thousands of backpackers like me. I don't really care about company hell I might even make friends with some backpackers and enjoy a city with them. Right before I go to my next city.
Too bad your trip had to be canceled. But I've traveled alone many times, and don't think it's such a bad thing. As others have mentioned, you basically set your own agenda, go at your own pace, take your time seeing the sights, and come and go as you please. But that's just me.
I've traveled to all fifty states and twenty two countries over the course of my life. Almost all of these trips were by myself. I've found that you tend to meet people and you can set your own pace and do whatever you want. It's not for everybody but I sure have enjoyed it.
