You don't have to go to McD's to eat for next to nothing in Vegas! I'm shocked so many don't know about the awesome deals there. I go there very frequently and know where to find the cheap, good eats. Fatwallet.com has a ton of ideas for where to get good, cheap food in Vegas. On other travel boards, people always talk about the very cheap food they got while there. Where are people going that they're paying $15 for breakfast?????
I've also never paid more than $80/night for a hotel on the strip. Sign up for hotel deals on their site and you'll get notified by email when they have specials. And, Priceline is your best friend. While Vegas is not my favorite place, it's the cheapest by far if you know how to do it right.

Deciding that a city is a terrible place based on food prices in my hotel would cause me to diss an awful lot of cities! For that matter so would homeless people hitting me up for money...

Ah, that makes sense! I don't think I've ever willingly eaten a meal inside the hotel, since they are usually terrible and overpriced!
And as far as the homeless population goes, NYC is the only city without them in the street. When I lived there, I remember Giuliani doing something to get rid of them and it worked. At that point, I couldn't figure out what he could have possibly done to clean the streets of them, but after moving to San Diego I realize that he just shipped them here given that I've never seen so many anywhere else in the US!

Ding, Ding, Ding! You win the prize! When I go to Vegas I am in meetings all day and we are forced to eat Breakfast and Lunch at the hotel. But, I also encountered the same thing when going out to dinner. Mediocre food a exorbitant prices. I am not someone that likes all-you can eat buffets and I avoid McDonald's like the plague. Another thing I don't like about Vegas is that in order to get anywhere in a hotel, you are forced to walk through the smoke filled casino. If I wanted my lungs filled with smoke, I would smoke. But, I choose to be healthy and not smoke. I also leave the city just feeling dirty. Sorry, but you can not convince me of the merits of visiting Las Vegas. I go there because my boss loves Vegas, and the rest of us are forced to endure this crappy city (my co-workers feel the same way I do!).
For people who go to Las Vegas for pleasure and were disappointed. what did you expect?
If people go on business, isn't it your boss that is footing the bill?
Maybe the boss should schedule it in Honolulu and make the people pay for it who attends

So let loose, have fun and you just might discover the Vegas many of us already have!

I would say most disappointing places I have been considering the hype is Las Vegas and Orlando.
Both places are like the old Roman "bread and circuses" lightweight entertainment for the low IQ masses.
And both places are stocked with local citizens that all came from some place else and you have the sense it was the "end of the line" for them. Las Vegas especially has a whiff of desperation about the whole place.
Plus both are obscenely hot and unpleasant.
Dead on the money. I'm in Vegas now. I have been coming here for 20 years (not usually by choice) and this place just sucks.
Turkey: We became disenchanted pretty quickly after getting annoyingly aggressive sales pitches in every store, restaurant, or museum that we visited. Or, even worse, having people follow us around for blocks trying to sell some useless .25 cent item.
Coney Island: I’d read a flattering NYTimes article on CI, and on a visit to NYC, I convinced my friend from Manhattan to come along, telling her it would be a fun, “quirky” day trip. After a particularly long and unpleasant train ride to get there, we didn’t find one redeeming quality in the place; it was a veritable dump. Yeah, my friend was terribly unhappy with me over that one.
