Venice can be magicial if you visit at the right time - I think I've been there four times and the only time it was really flooded badly was at Thanksgiving - but it went down during the day. New Year's is a blast in Piazza San Marco. Also been there in April and May, I think. Some of the cities in Europe which were disappointing are Marsellies, Genoa, Torino -- etc. a lot of industrial postwar crap but there are charming spots in center city I understand. Never had enough time or enthusiasm to go see.. Pisa was also kind of a drag except the Leaning Tower - I would suggest just stopping over for a couple of hours on the train..the cabbies all know the drill...
Hated the Delhi region of India - filthy, polluted, endlessly dust covered, disorganized, crowded, depressing, confining.... and this is coming from a person that is experienced in visiting 3rd world countries usually, and spent some very enjoyable time in the similiarly cultured Nepal.
New Orleans - I've been there pre-Katrina several times. It was a filthy crime ridden city and after a couple of strolls up Bourbon St. dodging drunks I was bored. Food was good though.
Vegas Strip during the day - Looks like one giant movie set during the daylight hours. At night it's an entirely different experience though. I would recommend anyone going there for the first time arrive at night when the city is lit up.
Niagara - While the falls are beautiful, the surrounding city is kind of depressing. I never expected much from Buffalo either, but it was grim.
Statue of Liberty - Climb a narrow spiral staircase one tedious step at a time with herds of tourists just so you can get a short pek through the crown and a couple of snapshots. Don't go on a hot humid summer day!
Plymouth Rock - It's a big rock on the beach. The end.
I once had the misfortune of spending the night in Jackson, Tennessee. At at the Shoney's I was served fish that was still frozen. And the waitress got mad when I brought it to her attention.
It's in such a lovely area we had great hopes for a nice stop-over. Oh well.
Phoenix, AZ. A sprawled out city that I thought was unattractive.
I try to keep an open mind and appreciate places for what they are when I travel. I love Vegas, even though I'm "supposed to" despise the place as an urban/city enthusiast. But I couldn't help but hate Phoenix. It's Las Vegas without the Strip or Fremont Street.
