love the idea.

a guy did the opposite of you... as in he started his journey in NYC. he left his career to do a walk across america. he is one of my heroes. here is the link: Adventurer leaves NY career to walk across US - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100527/ap_on_re_us/us_the_big_walk - broken link). you only live once, you might as well do something epic .

A Walk Across America (http://www.meetingground.org/newspage/a_walk_across_america.htm - broken link)

I know someone that did that and this is a list of the articles he's written about the experience. I met him when he came thru our town and carried his backpack for a little ways but it was heavy--of course. It's a good idea to do some conditioning before you go or you won't get very far. I know Don had some problems--when you're on the road, hygiene is difficult and shaving almost impossible and he looked like a homeless man and was often treated like one--it really opened his eyes to how the homeless are treated in our country. Don placed some restrictions on himself that wouldn't be necessary to someone else, so he may have made it more difficult than it had to be, but this will be difficult anyway. Don't let that stop you though.

Today I passed a man who is rollerblading from Ca to Mass. so great to see such dedication.

Don Vermilyea ate a lot of trail mix, but he is a vegetarian. Trail mix is easy though b/c it's light and has a lot of cals for the weight. He had to stop at about every hwy exit to get water b/c he had to drink so much and it's not easy to carry enough water. I played a little joke on him--I went out and bought a liter bottle of water and trail mix and hid them under a rail on the hwy where I knew he was going. To make sure he'd see them, I laid a trail of shiny quarters--I knew he picked up every spare coin he saw and had amassed quite a collection. That was fun. I wish you luck--I won't be walking across America, but I always thought that it would be fun to walk from Alaska to Patagonia. Or across China or something.

For places to stay you could try wwoofing--http://www.wwoofusa.org/

You could argue that you'll never have enough money, so don't worry and just do it.

Life has a funny way of dealing with these things, though I'm not suggesting irresponsibility!

Forrest Gump didn't have any money in his pocket when he set out. That is a true story, isn't it?

Will you sleep in motels or a tent?

I could see myself doing the trip across America - I'd worry most about safety - either from road traffic or violence. It would be an interesting thing to do with a several people (safety in numbers).
