It'll catch on with other airlines. Their filling a loophole that has existed for years. Its called Gate Check. Whereas you check your luggage at the gate and you get it back at the gate. Too many people are abusing it with larger carry-ons. Just modify a personal carry-on and you'll bypass the fee.

They've limited the size of the carry-ons for a looooong time. It's my choice to use a larger one still meeting the requirements and still fitting in the overhead bin; it's their endless greediness to dare even charge for that! 45 dollars!

The Airlines have, but not the TSA checkpoints. I see nearly full size luggage being Gate Checked. Things you know weigh more than 25lbs just by looking at them.
If the airlines had to depend on me for revenue they would be out of business by now. I never fly anymore and I use to work for Delta. There is no excuse for the miserable experience that flying has become. I can't blame the airlines exclusively some of the problem is the passengers themselves. People have forgotten manners and a few other things and the entire flying experience is miserable anymore. I prefer to drive or take the train when I can.
Seeing how the airlines have collectively lost billions in this decade alone a small profit one year is welcomed.
Inflation is going on around you, I just recently bought a 7oz bag of cheese down from 8oz. Doesn't sound like a lot but that is what, 12% less? Airlines have a hard time raising fares so they increase fees. It's called hidden inflation. Get over it.
If you want to ride a bus for 2 days to take you what a plane would take 2 hours have at it. My time is more than worth the hassle.
The legacy/network carriers would love to enhance the experience but they just don't have the money to do it. Just look at this sub-forum "how to buy cheap tickets?" is posted on here about once a week. Passengers only care about the price.
There is so much that goes into operating an airline it boggles the mind.
PS And to the snobs, if you were really rich you'd have your own plane!!
