I know what property crime and violent crime are, but what are they indicators of? Ive seen areas with high property crime rates and comparably low violent crime rates and also vice versa. What type of area would be expected to have a high property crime rate and what type of area would likely have a high violent crime rate?

It would seem to me that a high property crime rate with a low violent crime rate would be in the wealthier neighborhoods that don't have gated communities. More things left out in the open that thieves would find to be worth stealing would be my guess.

Violent crime can happen anywhere, due to domestic issues, etc., but areas that have gangs living in them seem to have more violent crime issues.
