Tragic here the circumstance of an elderly man who was married to a woman for nearly 70 years. Just think of the bond they shared. Her mind was being destroyed by dementia and he felt compelled to commit this mercy killing. People complain about politics, the economy, Obama, Palin, jobs, race, so on and so forth. Let's hope that one day your anguish doesn't become so severe in your old age that you feel compelled to commit such act or that you don't yourself become a victim in this manner. Tragic.

I can understand it. Dementia is hardest on the one's who don't have it. But don't romantize the reasons for it...I have heard spouses go on about how much money was being spent on the spoiuse that was in a nursing home, we don't know what his motivations were, so it may not be the "sad man, doing his wife a favor" killing. It could have been, "My wife is spending $5000 a month of my money, and I will be broke soon". You just never know.
I can scarcely imagine his daily life, routine. How sad to look into unseeing eyes again and again and again.
We should be allowed to die with dignity. No one should have to deplete all of their resources to see their loved one to the grave.
Life is not and has never been fair, but if we don't care for our most needy, most fragile citizens, the indigent elderly, they will have no reason to... live, breathe, carry on, volunteer, make a difference... Their passing is our loss.
How are the seniors in your neighborhood doing? Do you notice or even care?
i read about this and it haunted me. i gotta say, if this were my grandfather, i would be giving him a massive hug. if you put down an animal in pain with no hope of recovery, its called mercy. lets hope that california thinks the same. the idea of this man dying in prison makes my heart hurt. God understands these sorts of actions- at least the God that i know.

I'm with you on that. I saw the picture of him, and was so saddened. I do not think he did it for financial reasons. They were married 70 years. He was so loving toward her, taking care of her, visiting her 3 times a day. The fact that he was sitting in a chair in her room with the gun in his pocket after he shot her shows he didn't try to "get away" with anything. It was done out of mercy and love. It's all so sad.
How extremely sad. Seeing my grandmother slowly succumb to dementia is very sad and aggravating at the same time. While she has not entered full fledged dementia and she only spends about 1.5 months out of the year with us, I can see the desperate act this man must have felt he had to do.
While I don't condone killing anyone for ANY reason, I bet this man dies very soon of natural causes. Let him go home and die with dignity himself.
Old age is awful. I hope I don't live that long.
