Horrifying miscarriage of justice, but I'm hoping that the prominence of this article might change the situation.
Was Kevin Cooper Framed for Murder?
By Nicholas Kristof, With Jessia Ma and Stuart A. Thompson
This is the story of a broken justice system. It appears that an innocent man was framed by sheriff’s deputies and is on death row in part because of dishonest cops, sensational media coverage and flawed political leaders ... who refused to allow newly available DNA testing for a black man convicted of hacking to death a beautiful white family and young neighbor. I am not surprise at all. Many cops are people with low self-esteem who have little else in life. It's either flip burgers or become cops. Give people like that a gun and a badge and it's only a matter of time before bad things happen. Unchecked power leads to abuse and corruption.

I'm not surprised at all either.
Mostly because I live near Williamson County, Texas, where there are a shameful number of men convicted of horrible crimes who are factually completely innocent - not just sort of let out on a technicality.
I sat through the Scott Peterson fiasco, so no, I'm not surprised that the country at large is willing to convict on no evidence, just gut feeling.

Do you really think so? I had the impression that many of them were boys who grew up revering cops.
Today's NY Times "Daily" podcast profiles this story and interviews Kevin Cooper. It is a flagrant miscarriage of justice that takes place over generations in a traditionally "blue" state - California. I can't believe that they will not re-examine all of the evidence. This makes no sense at all.
