What is it with Charles Manson and all the sensationalist fame?

ok, he led a hippy cult in the 60's that killed a few people, and bad that that is, why is there such a lingering infamy?

plenty of people have done far worse yet we hear next to nothing about them.

What makes the Manson case stand out so much?

Apparently you know no details.

Read up on it and then report back.

This is a link to TruTV.com's several page article about the case: Charles Manson and the Manson Family — Murder! — Crime Library on truTV.com.

It was famous because at the time it was one of very few mass murders (5 people) that we read about in the newspapers (we didn't have instant access to the Internet or cell phones), tv didn't necessarily have on-the-scene reporting, and it involved a famous director (Roman Polanski) and his wife (Sharon Tate).

This is a link to the Charles Manson bio on Wikipedia: Charles Manson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It was also one (if not the only) case in which a song was blamed as the catalyst. Here's a link that describes how "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles was interpretted and/or rewritten (click on any blue links for more info when you bring up the page) by Manson.

Happy Researching!! Try it, it's fun!!

Not all of us are so jaded that we'd use "epic" to describe Manson's murders.

And, a connection to Manson, there was the attempted assassination of Gerald Ford in 1975 by Lynette Fromme.

The hype made sense in context. A certain element of America was terrified of the youth culture that Manson was a part of.

It was also most Americans first glimpse into cults and the Manson Family themselves made things a circus with their antics. It also involved Hollywood types and Manson was known to some famous musicians. Not to mention, Manson himself was an odd duck and interesting character and always gives great interviews. He perpetuates his fame.

How old are you? Because if you lived it, and saw how the Manson Family acted during the trial, it was a media circus, unrivaled by anything else prior to that time frame. All about the hippie generation, Haight Ashbury, Free Love, and the entire genre of that time frame. With the backdrop of Vietnam...add to the fact that Charles Manson killed a famous actress, and involved the Hollywood set, made it evern more of a media blitz.
