It was famous because at the time it was one of very few mass murders (5 people) that we read about in the newspapers (we didn't have instant access to the Internet or cell phones), tv didn't necessarily have on-the-scene reporting, and it involved a famous director (Roman Polanski) and his wife (Sharon Tate).
It was also one (if not the only) case in which a song was blamed as the catalyst. Here's a link that describes how "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles was interpretted and/or rewritten (click on any blue links for more info when you bring up the page) by Manson.
It was also most Americans first glimpse into cults and the Manson Family themselves made things a circus with their antics. It also involved Hollywood types and Manson was known to some famous musicians. Not to mention, Manson himself was an odd duck and interesting character and always gives great interviews. He perpetuates his fame.
How old are you? Because if you lived it, and saw how the Manson Family acted during the trial, it was a media circus, unrivaled by anything else prior to that time frame. All about the hippie generation, Haight Ashbury, Free Love, and the entire genre of that time frame. With the backdrop of Vietnam...add to the fact that Charles Manson killed a famous actress, and involved the Hollywood set, made it evern more of a media blitz.
