Hmm, that's good if he doesn't want a trial. The Fort Hood shooter wanted to plead guilty to the murder charges but the judge refused to allow it since he could get the death penalty (that'd have been terrible - not). Castro getting the death penalty for the forced miscarriages is a LONG shot and not worth the expense of a trial.
I agree. It would be a tragedy if this actually went to trial. Even if the prosecutor hit the jackpot and Castro was actually convicted of murder and sentenced to death, it would be 20 to 30 years before he could be executed. The SOB would be in his 70s or 80s by that time.
It's my thought that he did that not only to have his 15 minutes of fame, but also to further humiliate his victims, who will most likely have to appear as witnesses and be cross-examined by his defense, and be forced to re-live the experience.
I agree. This is a horrific situation, and I am so glad those ladies are alive to see him prosecuted.
However....Just to clarify that a not guilty plea is not abnormal.
Here's how it works. You always plead not guilty the first time...If you plead guilty right away, the whole process stops. Case is done. Lock em up.
So, any defense attorney will normally encourage a not guilty initial plea from their client.
Then the process puts the ball in the prosecutors court. They must then prove the case against the defendant.
It often becomes a sort of waiting game....The defendant is waiting for a good plea deal, counting on the over worked prosecution department to make them an offer.
I remember hearing about this right after the girls were found, and then nothing. Even this article is from a few days after they were found. I wonder who the other woman is/was.
I wonder how this guy is going to be treated in prison? I wonder if his 'deal' would be to be put in a place where other prisoners will not attack him? Do they have prisons for the criminally insane - because that's where he obviously belongs.
I don't think he's insane. That's an insult to insane people. He knew exactly what he was doing. I'm guessing he'll be in some sort of protective custody.
He plead guilty, and took a plea. No death penalty. No trial.
