Why do women write letters to convicted killers in prison? (children, attorney)

It depends on the inmate.

If he is in prison for life then, for a woman, it is safe to correspond with him. They will never be together on the outside. It is probablty a woman who has been hurt or abused before - or a woman who wants to be in a relatonship but wants to retain her independence without a real commitment.

If the inmate is being released in a few years, it'.s probably a low self-esteem woman who wants an eventual relationship.

I had a coworker who had previous worked for a contractor doing work on Riker's Island (Prison in Queens, New York). After work she had to go through a checkpoint and open her trunk for inspection, etc. One day she was leaving and at the checkpoint and she witnessed two women fighting. One was saying, "It's MY week to visit him! You were supposed to go last week and if you didn't make it, well, too bad. You have to wait until next week."

She said it was hilarious watching two women fighting over a man WHO IS IN PRISON.

In those cases, they probably knew the guy before he went in, though. But still.

That's funny.

I'm thinking that maybe some women are going for "the sure thing"? A guy in prison is gonna be so bored and with so little options that he will take anything.

What is up with that? This is very common apparently? Are all these women writing to convicted killers mentally ill? I don't understand it.

It's a fantasy relationship--they will never have to actually live with these guys. Guess for some women--a fantasy relationship is better than no relationship or a real one. Kind of like prison groupies.

I've always found this phenomena disturbing...from the Menendez brothers, Richard Ramirez to Scott Petersen...how screwed up can a person be to want to marry(in the case of Menendez and Ramirez) or even correspond with these psychos?!!!

Rosalie Martinez was married to a a prominent lawyer in Tampa, Victor Martinez. They had four young daughters. Rosalie served as a death penalty mitigation expert with the Hillsborough County Public Defender’s Office.

Oscar Ray Bolin, Jr. was sitting on death row in Florida. Known as "Bolin the Butcher" in 1986 he murdered and raped Stephanie Anne Collins 17 (fractured skull, raped and stabbed 6 times,) Natalie “Blanche” Holley 25 (she was raped and stabbed 8 times) and Teri Lynn Mattews 26 (beaten, raped & stabbed.)

Rosalie met Oscar Ray Bolin, Jr. in 1995 working on his rape and murder cases. Rosalie divorced her husband, he was awarded custody of the four daughters. She lost her job as her emotional feelings for Bolin, interfered with her work. She married Oscar Ray Bolin, Jr. via the telephone in 1996.

During jury selection for Casey Anthony the media picked up on a picture of Anthony sitting with Rosalie Bolin and it hit the news. Baez had hired "Bolin the Butcher's" wife. Baez removed Rosalie and she worked behind the scenes, no TV shots after that.

Bolin has been granted several appeals and retrials in the three murder cases over the years. Juries have convicted Bolin and sentenced him to death numerous times, but appeals courts have overturned his conviction and sentences, which led to more trials. This past February the Florida Supreme Court upheld the death penalty for Oscar Ray Bolin convicted in the slayings of three Tampa women 27 years ago. This guy has been on death row forever and cost Florida millions of dollars in appeals and retrials.

Rosalie Bolin wasn't just a 'letter writer' to a convicted rapist/murderer she had sex with him in his cell working on his case, left her husband & daughters and married the Butcher!

I can see being curious enough to write to some of these guys to see what makes them tick. Once you've fallen in love with him you're in a whole new ballpark, though.
