No, I am not talking about Richard Ramirez.

The Original Night Stalker started out as the most brazen and one of the most prolific serial rapists in California history before graduating to serial murder. He is considered to be one of the most elusive and sadistic predators to ever stalk the streets of urban America, but chances are you have never heard of him.

The East Area Rapist (EAR) started raping women in the unincorporated suburban areas just east of Sacramento proper in 1976. While there were many notorious rapists stalking those same streets around the same time as EAR, none struck so much fear into the heart of a community, a city, and then a state. The reason had a lot to do with the EAR's MO. While serial rapists are a cunning bunch of deviants who will use their wiles to assault women and terrorize communities, most everyone feels safe in their own homes, perhaps with a gun in the nightdresser and a strong husband at their side; a dog at the foot of the bed. None of those things deterred the EAR, who committed nearly 50 home-invasion-style offenses after meticulously stalking victims and doing intensive reconaissance on their homes. The EAR broke into the homes of victims and potential victims weeks before he attacked, gaining intelligence on the inhabitants' lifestyles and work schedules. He made ongoing hang-up calls to unsuspecting households over a period of weeks and months to determine who was home and when. After an assault occurred in a particular area, the police would canvas and find evidence of prowling on a massive scale in the weeks and months preceding an attack.

While the EAR focused on women living alone for his first 15 known offenses, he suddenly flipped the script and began attacking couples as they slept in their beds. He hit houses where homeowners had firearms and dogs, where children were present, and where other occupants slept quietly in other parts of the house.

After nearly 50 separate known attacks across Northern California, the EAR slipped out of sight. It wasn't long before couples in Southern California began turning up dead in their own homes, usually bludgeoned and bound. The cases occurred in multiple jurisdictions and left homicide investigators flummoxed. Meanwhile, back in the EAR's old hunting grounds, a few intuitive cops were reading the papers and noting the gradual uptick in murders of couples and young women in their own homes. As this was before DNA technology changed the way these kinds of crimes are investigated, the detectives' repeated calls to places like Santa Barabara and Irvine went ignored. The cops in these jurisdictions could not believe the murders were related to a sicko rapist from Sacramento. For 14 years the question of whether or not the murders in SoCal and the rapes in NorCal were connected remained unanswered.

The story of the EAR/ONS, as he is known by cops and investigators, is one of the most frightening and baffling mysteries in the annals of American crime. He remains to this day one of the most prolific serial sex offenders and murderers to never be caught. For the full story (which is far bigger and more shocking than anyone can imagine), check out this incredible website put together by author, Jian Quasar:

The Night Predator -- Case of the East Area Rapist AKA The Original Night Stalker

I hope that maybe, just maybe, someone reading this post will link to the site, read up on the EAR/ONS and remember something from that period in time that could provide the clue needed to bust the case open, identify the perpetrator, and bring comfort and justice to his many victims and their families.

Peace,

TOkidd

I always think it's such a travesty when an evil monster gets to live out his life as a free man. I wish there were a foolproof way to catch them all!

I am still surprised the ONS was able to committ so many crimes without anyone figuring out who he was. He had such a long and prolific career, it really makes one consider what other things he could have done that were just never attributed to him.

Yeah, exactly. Guys like that tend to get worse over time. Even Ted Bundy started out as just a drunken window-peeper.
