Elmer Wayne Henley and David Owen Brooks were classmates in my freshman year of high school. They told me stories of picking up young men for their "friend". I didn't believe them - too unbelievable.
I used to play with Pamela Smart in the airport when we were kids and our dad's had flights...both our dad's were pilots. She and Greg (her husband that she had the teen boy who she seduced, kill) lived about 2 miles from my mom and dad.

Wow. I've seen her on a few shows discussing the crimes. What a case!
WMPE, I know the story you are talking about. That was way back when. The maggie's was on San Pedro Avenue in a two story rustic looking building. Yes this couple did capture a waitress. My sister and her friends would sometimes go there.
In the past, I have lived close to both John Wayne Gacy (albeit decades after the fact) and James Holmes. Have you ever lived close to either the residence of a well-known killer or the scene of their crimes?
More than 15 years ago when I worked for the Missouri Dept. of Social Services I was the case manager for Gregory Breedon, a suspected mass murderer in Kansas City, MO. The police always believed he was a modern-day Jack the Ripper. They alleged that Breeden abducted, raped and strangled about seven prostitutes between 1984 and 1996. After killing the women, he would then hack apart their bodies with a chainsaw and throw the pieces in the Missouri River. They would wash up several days later in some small town far downstream.
Breeden was never convicted. The police could never find enough solid evidence to bring him to trial. But since he was still the prime suspect, the police used almost any means necessary to keep him behind bars. If Breeden even as much as jaywalked, the judge would through him a jail for a year. One mile over the speed limit, two years in county lockup! They were hoping to someday crack the case and eventually bring Breeden to trial for murder and lock him up forever.
Breeden might have committed the perfect crime. He never spent a single day in jail for murder. He died about 7 years ago. What's strange is that after the police named him as a suspect and started tracking him, the killings stopped. I do believe that he was guilty of killing those women.
I lived in a town that is known for the Jeff Davis 8. Happened over the course of several years. I knew a few of the victims. I even bought a few beers for the first victim at a local bar I frequented near my home. She also made me laugh when I needed to, when I was going through some hard times with my ex. I knew what she and some of the victims were about and distanced myself from any further relations, other than a name and acquaintance level. They knew our boundaries and respected that greatly. I also bought marijuana from them and they all said just do this and leave all that other ---- alone, because crack and the other drugs are from the devil. Loretta was older than me and she had the "older sister" way of talking to me. Loretta was a very nice woman who made some bad choices. Hell, they all did. But they didn't deserve what happened to them.
I saw another victim one night while working, and what I've seen haunts me to this day. She had a large cut on a part of her body and was with someone.
There was a book written about the case(s) and even a few series on ID Channel.
The book, Murder In The Bayou dives much deeper than the show series. It gives more information and makes the readers question whether or not that police could be involved.
These are the Jeff Davis 8:
The first victim, Loretta Lewis, 28, was found floating in a river by a fisherman on May 20, 2005. Other victims were Ernestine Marie Daniels Patterson, 30; Kristen Gary Lopez, 21; Whitnei Dubois, 26; Laconia "Muggy" Brown, 23; Crystal Shay Benoit Zeno, 24; and Brittney Gary, 17. The final body of Necole Guillory, 26, was found off Interstate 10 in 2009.
