How much prison time do you think this guy will realistically get?

Man stole guns to pay for drug debt, Hackettstown Police say | NJ.com

Not the maximum amount of time he COULD get, or SHOULD get, but realistically the amount of time the court will LIKELY sentence him to???

He is charged with 2 counts of theft of movable property, 2 counts of possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, 2 counts of unlawful possession of a handgun, and 2 counts of possession of a weapon by a person convicted of a crime.

It will depend on his previous criminal history, what level of offense those violations are in NJ, and whether NJ has a firearms specification requiring mandatory prison time for a firearms offense, as well as the attitude of the court in which the offense is tried. Here, he'd probably get three years for the firearms specification.

Well, it sounds as if he has a prior criminal record, if I am intrepriting this correctly.

Unfortunatly, about 10 years ago, I was friends with this punk, until I came to my senses and realized what a true scumbag he is. (I cut ties with him several years before his criminal history by the way).

Personally, I think anything less than 5-7 years behind bars for this prick would be a miscarriage of justice.

His crime was non-violent but that hardly matters to people. I agree, he should serve some time but any form of incarceration without treatment will do nothing but cost more taxpayer money. Personally, I think 1-2 years should be the expectation.

No. Did I miss something that indicated a behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone? You need to get over your hate of someone who did something wrong and non-violent. My guess is, you think addicts who steal are evil bastards, and that is about as stupid as believing in the boogie man.

Police do not determine the charges; that is DA. If a felon on past conviction; felon in possession of firearm could go bad against him in some states. Its going to depend no his total record. May even face the ***** as its called if third felony. That would be life as a habitual criminal if state has that designation.

He'll probably get 1 year drug rehab and 3 years probation. The prisons are over crowded today and judges are getting more lenient.

I suppose you'd agree OJ Simpson was unfairly sentenced for burglary and theft.

In September 2007, a group of men led by Simpson entered a room at the Palace Station hotel-casino and took sports memorabilia at gunpoint, which resulted in Simpson's being questioned by police. O.J. Simpson's Arrest Report - Page 5: Nevada v. Orenthal James Simpson, et al. - September 16, 2007

There is a difference between stealing something out of someone's garage (or where ever) and pointing a gun at someone. If you do not see that difference, you need to recalibrate the degrees to which you determine criminality.

Sending an addict to prison for stealing something cost way too much money, while providing little to no positive impact for society, other than parroting the "tough on crime" mantra for the "prison-industrial complex" that disproportionately impacts the poor and cost the middle class a tremendous amount of money. (hint: your not safe or unsafe with this person in jail or out of jail)
