Hello everyone,

Will you suggest a place to buy a car? I'm interested in getting a VW, but there is only one VW dealer in Tucson. Anyone has experience buying from Phoenix dealerships? If you can recommend a couple of places to go (or places to avoid) I'd really appreciate it. Are there any nearby cities worth checking out?

By the way, does it make a difference in terms of sales tax whether I buy in Tucson or in Phoenix?

Many thanks,

Oasis

Oasis,

Not too sure on the sales tax issue, but by the time you go to Phoenix and try to work a deal with them, all the time and gas that you used to get there, you could get the same vehicle here in Tucson. If you do your home work by going to Edmunds.com and seeing what the invoice price is, your going to get the lowest price possible. If you show the dealer all that info, and belive me I've done it a lot in Tucson, they always matched my price that I wanted to pay. Dealers are always going to make their money in the long run. My father is a car dealer for over 30 years, and a few tricks he taught me was, if the dealer is offering if, don't buy it and don't pay the destination fee of $200-$300 they like to charge. That is a charge they like to roll over your eyes cause they are saying that they had to pay for that vehicle to get to the lot. Arizona state law says that price can be negotiable.

Interesting question, Oasis . . .

Are you looking for a New VW or a Used VW?

Fairly important because if used, unless the law has changed over the last decade or so, you can avoid Sales Tax by purchasing from a Private Seller vs a Dealer.

Good Luck

Thank you for your great tips, TAGS70 and Bummer. I am focusing on a new one right now. Is Tucson's sales tax really 9.1%?

I think that's what it is after the last voting in May. I haven't noticed if it took effect already. And I just read this morning the city wants us to vote for another increase in Nov, which would bring it to almost 10%!

Unfortunately, Oasiss . . . that's about it and as Sierra has just posted, it looks like it is only going to go UP.

Definitely another advantage of buying USED from a Private Party.

Yes I saw that on the news - another 0.5% in November . So it's either a private party or buy it before November....

Well, if the voters aren't goddamn sheeple, it doesn't have to pass!

From personal experience, as long as you keep your eyes open while looking at the final negotiation, Chapman VW is not bad to work with. Leased a VW from them some time ago.

I am not sure about VW but Jim Click controls most of the dealerships in Tucson, period.
And likewise the Phoenix area is controlled by just a handful of folks.
So trying to deal in this state is tough.
Do your research, and stand your ground on your price.
If it's doable, they will sell to you.
My father was a dealer until he died.
