Please help! My husband and I (along with our 4 yr. old and 7-month old) are considering moving to the Catalina Foothills (Alta Vista neighborhood). We need to make a decision SOON but don't know much about Tucson or the neighborhood. I've been doing a lot of reading on here and it seems like most people posting don't like Tucson. Is there anyone out there who does??? I am aware that crime is an issue so any input there would be great! Thank you in advance for your time. We greatly appreciate it!!!

I LOVE living in Tucson, CLambert.

Due to my career choice many years ago, I have lived from "border to border to border" and prefer Tucson over all my previous homes.

As for crime . . . not perfect but definitely no worse than the average and probably much better than many cities of similar size.

As for the "negative posts" . . . some individuals will never be happy no matter where they choose to live. Remember, there is no perfect place to live, however, as far as I'm concerned, Tucson is at the top of the heap.

WELCOME and Good Luck.

I lived in Tucson before and am currently planning on moving back in 2011. But I enjoy warm weather and lots of sunshine! Crime is everywhere..in some places worse than others. I currently live in a small microcity of less than 130000 and we have lots of crime.

With any big city and being about an hour from the border, there will always be crime. As far as living here, I moved from Philadelphia and I will never moved back east again. I absolutely love Tucson and wouldn't trade this city for anyother. The Foothills is a great area to live in and to raise a family. Don't know where you are moving from, but Tucson is a great choice. I agree with Bummer, there will always be someone on here that will complain about Tucson, and they will never be happy any where they live.

if crime in Tucson really is one of your main concerns, just do the basics and you should be fine: be aware of your surroundings, lock the car and house, don't flaunt anything, turn lights on at night, meet the neighbors and watch out for each other, and all that.....but you're doing all this already, aren't you!!????

can't guarantee anything, though!

if you have time, you do need to get out here and spend several days looking around Alta Vista and other nearby areas and get a feel for it all before committing to anything.....be ready for dry air, desert vegetation, different architecture, a great variety of mostly unpretentious people, etc.....

the negativity is often from people who were expecting the moon and the stars....and didn't get it.....or they may have personal "issues" that Tucson didn't solve for them.....as with any large city, there are pros and cons....

just make sure Tucson will work for you.....and vice versa!

I'm very happy here....year-round outdoor recreation, dry air is great, still a bit of a small-town feel in certain areas, non-stuffy vibe.....there is some lack of neighborhood pride in some areas (not in Alta Vista!), some trashy areas, poor political leadership, competing beliefs for the future of Tucson, not a lot of private employment (except for Raytheon, most big employers are various govt. entities)......

I live in the foothills area and I love it! I'm glad I came here, I'm sure you will love it here. But like others said, don't expect Heaven on earth or anything and there's crime everywhere no matter where you live in this world. No city is crimefree, but Tucson is definately one of the safest at least where I live.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and wisdom. Do you know much about the Alta Vista neighborhood?

Default Tucson...

I lived in Tucson from 2006-2010, and it was a cool place to live. Though it was a positive experience, sadly, I had to leave because the job market wasn't the most diverse....

But I do miss the mountain views, the pleasant weather perfect for golfing, and the people were pretty nice overall. Nothing poppin' downtown as it has made minimal improvements to attract folks there.

The south end of town wasn't terrible because i know lots of good people there however, I found more peace of mind living on the north end of town.

Alta Vista is VERY NICE, and you wouldn't go wrong living there. If I had an extra 800k, I would've purchased there!!

If I were you, i'd rent for awhile and truly feel out the city. I'm not sure of your job industry, but I also would research tucson's economy before dropping any eggs in the basket....
