So I heard you might have a new aquarium. Anyone down there have any more details about this?

well, an aquarium was proposed as part of the "Rio Nuevo" downtown redevelopment project 11 years ago, but was dropped years ago as too expensive....but don't get us started on Rio Nuevo!....what a messy situation

This has come up again and again to cause confusion for visitors. For a while several years ago, the group proposing the Downtown aquarium actually had it listed on several web site sources and even some online maps, conveying somewhat deliberately that it was much more tangible and feasible than it actually was. Had Rio Nuevo lived up to anywhere close to its expectations, the aquarium still would have been a pipe dream, at the most.
I say that's probably for the best. Tucson doesn't even have a year-round river. Why would we need an aquarium? The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum has a fantastic aquatic exhibit, highlighting the limited water-dwelling species in our desert, and I think that's the closest we should ever get to having an aquarium.

thanks, coati....I agree.....seems like several cities already have the obligatory aquarium as part of their must-see lineup....I don't think an aquarium would be a viable attraction here - just not a desert thing.....

Well, I've seen 2 aquariums in Phoenix (and a sting ray oetting area at Phoenix Zoo). I've been down to the Sonoran Desert Mesuem and love it there, but with the news recently about the aquarium proposal, I was wondering if it'd be something to that become a reality and something that I could visit.

Denver had an aquarium called Ocean Journey. It went broke (and there's water there), so Landry's Seafood Restaurants bought it and it's now a part of the restaurant. It just couldn't make it on its own. I don't see how Tucson could support an aquarium. Between the Rio Nuevo debacle, losing Spring Training, and poor management of the city, Tucson isn't doing much to attract visitors. Sad, but true.
