Is the season short? Is there any type of terrain park or jumps? Are the lifts pretty slow?

Thanks in advance.

The "seasons" are basically a few days to a couple weeks after a storm passes through. How often storms pass through and how much snow they dump at the top vary from year-to-year.
Initially it can be difficult to get to the top (4WD or chains); however, once the roads get cleared it's not difficult, but it does get crowded--especially on the weekends.
I don't live in Tucson anymore nor do I ski, but I do like Mt. Lemmon and Summerhaven a lot. It's fun to go. Whether it is snowy at the top or not it would still be worth a trip.

Crap.. the Mt Lemmon website is misleading. They are making it look you can have an actual season there.

That sucks about it being difficult to get up there, my car can barely handle snow in the city streets let alone uncleared mountain roads.

Thanks for the input from both of you.

Here are two pictures I took from a trip up there (didn't ski, just looked around) in March 2008:

What you see... is what you get. If you're interested in small ski areas near desert towns, look at Las Vegas' ski area at Mt Charleston-- just a little bigger than Mt Lemmon and more consistent snow. There are a few places in the San Gabriel/ San Bernardino Mtns north of L.A. that are worth checking out too. Of course, all these places are a total pathetic joke compared to the skiing in Colorado, Utah, and northern California.

Hey Vegas, Thanks. Did you happen to notice a terrain park while you were there? EDIT, I forgot that you mentioned that you didn't actually go into the ski area.

Most people in Tucson who want to ski go to Sunrise Park in the White Mountains or Snowbowl in Flagstaff. You can also go to New Mexico at Ski Apache in Ruidoso, but it's full of Texans and kind of a long drive.
A few years ago I played hooky one day and went up there with some friends while the ski area was open just to play in the snow. It's kind of fun to watch the skiers. I don't ski though. I was told by someone that they run the lifts during the summer some days, but I don't know that that's true.
Tucsonans are giant pu****s about snow on Mount Lemmon. They actually close the road before it snows to everyone but 4x4/chains. Once it actually starts snowing, they'll often close it completely. They only have one snowplow, but I guess it doesn't work so well. After that, they'll open it back up to residents only, then eventually to everyone. That first day when they open it is a zoo and they often end up closing the road later that day because they have too many people up there. However, if you wait the crowds out and go the next day, the snow is often in really bad shape because it's been trampled over and has melted slightly and refrozen.

But I love that we have something like that. It's great to just say "Let's go play in the snow" but then be able to leave it behind and not have to deal with the problems it causes. The ski area is also the southernmost ski area in the Northern hemisphere, which I think is really cool.

Ironic, but there's an article about the ski area in the paper today.
There's nary a skier in sight on snow-challenged Lemmon

I'll never understand how anybody can ski there... As soon as there's enough snow to ski, the road is closed! I guess you have to have a private jet!

I'm guessing they'll be some snow there to ski on tomorrow and probably Monday... maybe Tuesday. Getting there, yeah, that's another story....
