I would be working around El pueblo park area. Please advice regarding the apartments in that area, and crime level. I have heard bad things about south tucson. I am confused regarding which area to choose to live with my wife and 2 year old kid.

That is not an area where I would feel comfortable living. You could always live further north in a better neighborhood and have a little longer drive instead. Or, rent a house 20 min. south in Sahuarita or apartments in Green Valley.

I have been in Tucson for 12 years and I am leaving to go to VA for a job. I love the east side. I have never been a victim of crime. I can tell you you will get sick of driving far everyday. I lived out in Marana for 2 years and I got super sick of the drive, lots of freeway traffic. The surface roads are easier. The east side has everything one needs. Good places to eat, shopping is easy to get to, and there is a circle K or quickmart on about every corner for those late night cravings. I don't know about the schools because I don't have school age kids. Housing is pretty cheap, you can buy a nice house now for about 99,000.00. Welcome to Tucson.

Vail or Sahuarita, south of Tucson, are very family friendly. You might want to Google them and check out whether they'd work for your family. South Tucson (the town), and south Tucson (the area) are not good, family places. They're run down, have a lot more crime than other parts of Tucson and are better avoided if you have a small child. The drive from Vail or Sahuarita isn't bad at all.

Sadly South Tucson is the place to stay away from and has been for decades and is unlikely to change as others have said Sahuarita and Vail are nice. I also like Rita ranch, although might have to rent a house there.
