Tucson red-light camera contract on verge of expiring (Oracle: how much, to buy)

TUCSON, Ariz. -- It's been controversial since it was launched three years ago, but the city's red-light camera systems could soon go dark.
The operating contract expires on Monday, and its missing a signature.
That's because council member Steve Kozachik has some concerns about the program.
"I've got questions about whether or not we should be using these cameras to (generate revenue). I got real questions about whether or not we ought to be adding, and I think we should, adding another second to the amber so people aren't getting flashed for just blowing through intersections," said Kozachik.

However, how much do you want to bet that if the YELLOW LIGHT was extended to FIVE MINUTES there would still be RED LIGHT RUNNERS crying fowl and Po Me?

For those who refer to the Red Light Cameras as REVENUE GENERATORS . . . SO BE IT. However, statistics have proven time and time again that they do a fantastic job of reducing accidents, both simple property damage and major injury.

Could this reduction be because after the high fine charge these sited drivers cant afford to buy gas for their auto to get to work? (just a thought) I sure dont see the word SAFTY in the news story!

Definitely a possibility . . . whatever it takes is fine with me.

I'm not a big fan of Red Light Cameras but living fairly close to River and Oracle has taught me they are a positive towards reducing accidents. Prior to installation, simple Fender Benders all the way up to Major Injury Accidents were almost a daily occurrence. After the installation, accidents are almost rare.

True...I can see Oracle/River from my office window. Accidents really were a daily occurrence. Now, people are paranoid about getting tickets and they are finally stopping if they approach on a yellow light. It's very rare to see an accident at that intersection now.
