We are strongly considering Tucson, AZ. We are a retired, very active couple with three dogs and have lived in Mexico for the past 7 years. We are bored to death. My husband is from New York, I am from Chicago (the city). I wonder if you all could give us some help in finding a safe, but interesting city neighborhood. We would like to walk to restaurants, parks, etc. (Sort of like Chicago, but warmer). I don't think we want suburban living. So, our plan is to rent a home in an area and look around to buy a home eventually. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Gail and Al

I know exactly how you feel! I moved up to Tucson, from Mazatlan,Sinaloa Mx. last July! The best feeling I had in over 5 yrs, was when the US Customs Agent said, "Welcome back home, sir!!!" I'm from the Twin Cities and I think you will be very happy here. The people are great and the weather is perfect.

Thanks very much for your nice comments. I just cannot wait to have the Customs agent say the same to me.

Welcome home. We have a house on the beach at Rocky Point but have only gone 2 times a year for the past several.
I suggest the Marana or the Vail area for you. There are some pretty good rentals in both places.

Umm, Marana or Vail?

If you want to walk to things to do, you should be in mid town: Sam Hughes is nice.

I agree with robabeatle. Sam Hughes would be good for what you are seeking. Marana and Vail would be suburban, which you stated you do not want.

I reread what you wanted. I would say that just North of Sam Hughs is what you want, just across Speedway is the Saint Peter and Paul, U of A Hospital, Arizona Inn section.

Blenman-Elm was the neighborhood being referenced as north of Sam Hughes. It's a great area (as is Sam Hughes), but you may be hard-pressed to find rentals there more than just a vacation rental. You'll find more on the eastern side of Tucson Blvd, and it's still a good enough area that's somewhat walkable. I also really like the Miramonte (east of Country Club, north of 5th, south of Speedway, west of Richey) neighborhood and the La Madera (south of Fort Lowell, east of Tucson, west of Country Club, north of Glenn) area. In both of those areas, you will find a number of rental houses. The Campbell/Grant area is also nice (northeast of that intersection), but I spent literally months watching for rental houses to pop up a few years ago and never saw a one, save for an awful house on the neighborhood's edge. The Samos neighborhood (northwest of the Grant/Campbell intersection) is great as well, but the rentals tend to be in poor condition and are more student-oriented. I've looked at some really, really ugly and overpriced apartments and rental houses in that neighborhood.

I am really appreciative of all the suggestions. It sounds like we want to live close to or around Sam Hughes neighborhood. How are foreclosures in that area? Are there many? Are they dumps, or nice? Are there just college kids in the neighborhood? Or, are there mixed ages?
