Border Patrol has a long waiting list. The Pima County Sheriff is an idiot, but the Departmentitself has some fine officers. TPD is a good Department.

Border Patrol is at least a year long process to get hired. Have heard of it being longer. Tucson PD is hiring now. I just finished the academy with half my class being TPD. The You can figure on a 4-6 month hiring process with them, and 23 weeks training before you hit the streets. You are paid during the academy. TPD supplied most of the staff for my academy, and it seemed like a fine department.

I think TPD would be somewhat more dangerous than the BP. Moderator cut: off topic

Red face Nice Apartments

I think a lot of people are jumping to conclusions here when you said that. I hated apartments that required "credit checks" because they asked for a $50-$75 fee for them to run it, even when I had my current credit report in my hand.

Most furnished apartments in the area are corporate rentals that are not going to be cheap. Because we have a lot of military, federal government employees and such, many are set at the daily rate which is approximately the same as a hotel stay. However, there are some places that are set up like Suite 6 (a division of Motel 6) that have rates as low or lower than apartments during the summer. However, it will raise after Labor day and continue to rise until November through February. The better bet is to go unfurnished and find furniture on craigslist and Freecycle to get by with.

As far as nice apartments, there are lots of those, and outside of the mainstream apartment managers, there are some that will not require a credit check. Part of the problem is that Tucson is very spread out (nearly 40 miles across when you count suburban areas) and saying a nice apartment on the East side is not the same as a nice apartment on the Northwest side. Where someone is working has a lot to do with it, as you don't want to spend all your extra money and time on gas driving back and forth.

As far as the tangent of BP that everyone got onto, Federal Law Enforcement requires a thorough background investigation and good credit is one of the requirements listed, unless proper documentation for hardships can be otherwise proven. Friends in the process of applying to the Border Patrol have been in for over two years now, and there may be a delay still for the next six months until the government passes a budget.

Other law enforcement careers in Pima County, there are many security firms, and private contractors working along side our federal system. Sahuarita PD and Oro Valley PD I have heard good things about as well.
