I think the way they have approached the whole "inspection" thing is very underhanded and deceitful! I'm disabled and can't be without gas for any reason!
Protecting themselves from future liability isn't a scam, it's prudent corporate governance. I'm racking my brain for what type of disability would require the constant delivery of natural gas - not being a smartass or unfeeling, just really can't imagine what it is and how it could be accommodated for a brief period of time (Propane as a substitute?). SW Gas isn't going to jeopardize the health of a customer and isn't going to risk the lawsuit if they did so. I'm sure they'd work with you to provide whatever substitute would work for how ever long it took to do the necessary work.

So you would prefer they wait till your line explodes so you can sue them?

Question I felt I had to do it!

I have been a SWG customer for some 30 years. Some years ago, when my husband was overseas, a crew from SWG came to my door and said that they could smell gas at the meter which was in the alley. I was told I had to replace it, or my gas would be turned off, and have it put close to my house, they charged me about $400. I felt I had to do something so I put it close to the house as they would be responsible for the line but if it stayed in the alley they still were going to charge me $400 and if I did nothing I would have no gas at all. Now I hear they are doing this for free??

They'll pay to move entrance point to the house up to 20 feet as well. (If they don't find any leaks, they'll leave it alone)

Is this a scam? It sounds like they're offering to do literally thousands of dollars worth of work for nothing. When I called to ask some questions, I asked what they're getting out it, and she gave some vague answer about how the State Commision "made" them do it.

Has anyone had any experience with this program? Should I do it? If it sounds too good to be true...

I signed a meter relocation agreement today. The gas is shut off. The gasline must be replumbed from my furnace room, up to the roof, across the roof, and down the side of the house to the new meter. All at my cost. Three pricey plumbers will come by tomorrow to give me their big, fat bids. The gas leak was insignificant. My plumbing bill will be something else entirely. I am not happy.

I'd like to hear the end of the story from tom4416. My letter said they would turn off the gas and charge the repair to the homeowner and then move the meter closer to the house.
What's the bill for this "repair"? I can't believe it'll be zero if you own the line!

libby, i dont know how long you have been working for southwest gas, but there are a lot of us that still remember the time when tucson gas and electric ran the utilities here, and the initials TGE stood for tucson graft and extortion.

this is a good service the SWG is providing, and it does take tine to dig up, repair, and rebury the lines. we had to have it done a couple of years ago, but SWG didnt offer that service than, or if they did we still didnt want the meter moved, i forget which. our plumber found that our lines were leaking, including the water line, and they were both very near the catastrophic failure point. $2000 later and we have new lines running to the house. so either let SWG do the job, or you have it done, your choice.

Seems like they are telling our neighbors that they need to have their lines re-done under their house, and they give them a 1-800 number for plumbing services. The gas line movers are not related to SW Gas, they are a separate company, saying they want to move gas lines to above ground, pvc pipe, and onto roofs, which seems odd in the desert. Why would that be better than coating/plugging holes in the old galvanized? We are not yet convinced that this isn't some kind of scam.

Default Cap off your gas lines before they inspect

So, the gas lines failed the test, SW Gas shut off the gas for a few days. Then a family friend plumber came over and replaced 3 valves around the house with caps, and the new reading was 0 leakage. Instead of needing to re-plumb, get a permit, pay people, move the meter, re-route all the gas lines above ground, etc etc, there was nothing to do except replace valves that were leaking a teeny tiny amount. So the job is done, and SW gas turned the gas back on. Very lucky that we had a friend who re-checked it for us before the hullaballoo and expense started.

Yes they will replace it for free. However they take their sweet time to do so. Its an EMERGENCY to shut it off. Yet they will make u go 7 to 10 days min with no NECESSITIES such as heat, warm water, or stove. I have a sick mother and 86 yr old grandmother without all of the above. All SW gas can say is " were moving it for free". As if their not benifiting....What's even worse is the leak has been causing expensive bills for months and after many phone calls the rep suggested turning down the hot water heater..no remorse and NO CONSIDERATION for the elderly and ill.....
