Living in central NM I guess I have to consider myself lucky...no poopy paper filled rest rooms encountered yet.

Employed by a large commercial/industrial property owner i can attest to the nasty public bathrooms. First off, the graffiti written on the stalls. What person takes the the time to write this garbage, i don't know, but based on my experience the ladies room is always more descriptive than the men's room (with phone numbers and such)..

They are public bathrooms, and many of the users are homeless people who know the exact time of opening etc.. I feel for em, as some are people who are down on their luck, and others who are just plain nasty. It's the nasty ones who cause the most destructive problems.

The most common item found in these public restroom toilets that are jammed, are, cell--phones.
But in general they are nasty places, no matter how much maintenance is involved, it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the bunch for others.

I was going to mention Brazil, too. Honestly, you get used to it right away. Plus, you get in the habit of using the bidet. Ai, que saudades!
I have never seen a bidet in Brazil--- in hotels or private homes either.
