I think you just have to come out and experiment with the commute from various locations. Tucson has fewer freeways than any US city I'm aware of for its size, which means you will almost certain rely in part on surface streets unless you live near I-10. While the lack of freeways chopping through the city is part of its charm, it does affect travel times. Traffic lights on major streets are not very well timed, and the locals drive at a leisurely pace. For some reason, Tucson drivers generally won't move into the intersection while waiting for a break in traffic to make a left turn, which limits the number of cars that can turn at the yellow light. It's maddening if you're in a hurry, but charming if you go with the chill, relaxed Tucson lifestyle. Every commute is different, so visit and experiment. Good luck. I love Tucson -- I love its embrace of its desert climate and its Mexican heritage, and the slightly retro hippie-dippie vibe near downtown.
