Hi folks. So we currently live in Northern Colorado and are seriously contemplating relocating to Tucson by early summer 2013 to be near wife's family and to enjoy warmer weather. I have three kids, and two of them got enrolled through lottery at Basis Tucson's new elementary program at E. Broadway, near El Con Mall. I hear Basis is a good program, so I feel I need to take advantage of the oppt for them. Oldest daughter will ge going to middle school in Fall. Looking for help on where to live (Catalina FHs?) that would be easy with commuting kids to school at Basis and with finding a very good middle school (public) for daughter. I hear Oro Valley would be a hefty daily commute to the El Con Mall area (where Basis school located). I work from home, so location to live would be depending on where I can afford ( ~ $350K)and proximity to good schools. Feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!!!!

I would not recommend commuting from Oro Valley to El Con Mall on a daily basis for school. I live in OV and love it here but that would be a rough, time consuming commute 5 days a week. Oro Valley and Foothills both have a Basis School, but only start with 5th grade. The one you are referring to is a new program and is the first in town that I am aware of with first through fourth grades. Living location wise, a lot would depend on what kind of lifestyle/home you are interested in. Down around El Con there are some older historic neighborhoods with lots of character. Oro Valley is suburbia, Foothills has a blend of both older and newer homes and everything in between. The Foothills would not be too bad of a commute depending on where you live in The Foothills. If you kept it to the Foothills area off of Campbell or Swan (two main N/S streets) the drive to El Con would not be too bad.

Here are a couple of links for grading schools, Great Schools, and the Arizona Dept. of Education.

Good luck in your venture!

Thanks for the tips Rick! This helps. Will avoid OV due to distance from school for kids. Will need to look for adequate housing in CFs in order to be close to good Middle School for daughter.

We are moving to Northern Colorado (Fort Collins) from Tucson this summer. It is funny that you are moving here and us there. Unfortunately, I live in the Oro Valley area and don't know a lot about the CF middle schools only the Amphitheater ones. I know more about the CF elementary schools. Did you try to get your middle schooler in Basis too? They have one on River and Craycroft that is 5th-12th. My nephew and niece go to the one in Oro Valley and they love it!

Looks like you are escaping the heat, whereas I am clamoring it. Fort Collins is a great place and you will love it. Yeah, I would prefer the suburban feel of Oro Valley over CF, but since my elementary school kids are going to Basis Tucson's new program, I need to live closer to Tucson. My daughter is on waiting list for all the Basis schools in Tucson, but we will know next wk if she made the cut to the flagship one - Basis Tucson.
Thanks for your response!

I have a lot of friends that were on the waitlist and made it in pretty easily. I am sure she will get in. Do you have any advice on Ft. Collins schools? I am up here this weekend scouting housing and schools.

Have a look at the Broadmoor-Broadway neighborhood.
