so im moving to Tucson in dec. for a job. I'm curious what are the best and safest places to live? I've already heard that north Tucson in alright but I'm curious if there are other good places that are near by, south of the city and may not be within city limits such as Green Valley, Vail, or, Sahuarita. I don't have kids so I'm not worried about schools. thanks for any help you can give! Literally any info is helpful!

The number one issue is where will you be working (cross streets are good enough), closely followed by what is your budget and what are you looking to move into? House? Apartment? Bedrooms? Rent/own? How old are you and what are you looking for? Good nightlife? Good shopping? Peace and quiet?

Getting around Tucson on the surface streets is tough and the Interstate is of limited use unless you live or work close to it so suggesting something in the Sabino Canyon area (very nice and part of town) to a 24 year old who wants nightclubs and works in South Tucson would be a disaster.

well im military so ill be working on base. budget is around 1100 per month looking to rent a house. honestly in someways I don't care really how far from base I live. unless the interstate is really that god aweful. I just wanna live in a good neighborhood, in a nice house, where I don't have to be always looking over my sholder. kinda grew out of the nightlife a while ago, so being in a fun part of town isn't a huge concern. I've heard from multiple sources that south Tucson is terrible as far as being a ghetto and have really high crime rates. that why I'm curious if there are places in really far south Tucson that are closer to the base but not all that bad...

Vail and Sahuarita/Green Valley are really nice and safe. Green Valley is mostly age-restricted/retirement homes, but Sahuarita is all ages. I live in the area and love it because it is quiet, small town living. Some people do not like that though. Keep in mind, there is virtually no night life to speak of that far south. But, you could always stop off in Tucson for happy hour, etc prior to heading home.

$1100 a month gets you a 3 bed/2 bath house (1400+ sq ft), so that won't be an issue.

If you are looking for quiet suburbia (kids playing in the street, etc) then Sahuarita/Vail/Rita Ranch would all work, but they might be a little too quiet. Those will be the areas with newer houses which may or may not be an issue for you, but you will be further away from shopping, entertainment and dining.

There are some nice areas around the Tucson Mall (I would look North or East of there and not South), but that drive is less than ideal - 30 minutes of mostly surface streets unless you get up to Foothills Mall area and then it is 35 minutes, mostly on I-10. There is a LOT more to do in these areas - you will be closer to the movie theaters (there are surprisingly few in town), dining, shopping and just generally have more options for everything, but you will have more traffic.

Kolb Road is one of the main North/South roads to the base and Tucson Airport. Once you get North of Broadway the crime rate drops. A two car garage would be on my list of considerations. Of course if you leave the door open its a magnet to theft. If you continue north on Sabino Canyon across Tanque Verde road you will be in the lower crime rate areas of Tucson and close to the base.
