Looking at Tucson/Oro Valley to retire. Looking at my options for playing tennis outside of an active adult community. I find in Oro Valley that there is only one public tennis court. But for $135/month I can join the Hilton's Tennis Resort. There has got to be something else. Does anyone know of the tennis available in Tucson perhaps through city rec centers or clubs or where people meet for pick up games of tennis? Thanks.

The two situations you mention are the only two I know of in Oro Valley but I'm not a tennis player. I would suggest calling the Westward Look (a Wyndham-owned resort). I know several tennis players who have stayed there over the years; tennis is that resort's prime recreation.

It's website says, "Come have a ball on any of our eight championship tennis courts framed by breathtaking mountain views! Fancy a night game? Five courts are lit for night play. We’ll even find you a friendly challenger with our player matching service, where local members and resort guests can always find a game with someone of similar skill level. Players of all abilities are welcome and encouraged to participate in our ongoing round robins, leagues, match play and clinics."

I don't know what constitutes a "local member" but maybe it's worth asking. The website says the info contacts are the pro shop at (520) 917-2466 or by E-mail from tlepisto (at) wyndham (dot com). Tom Lepisto is the resort's director of tennis. The Tucson Weekly article I linked below (dated August 2013) says Westward Look has "roughly 100 people [who] have tennis club memberships that let them use the resort's courts at their convenience." If Mr. Lepisto can't accommodate you, perhaps he knows some other options that would suit.

Westward Look's entrance is on W. Ina between Oracle Road and First Avenue, so reasonably convenient to Oro Valley.

Check out the Tucson Racquet Club, 4001 N Country Club Rd, Tucson, AZ 85716. This might be a ways from Oro Valley, though.

Tucson Racquet and Fitness Club

They have 33 tennis courts, tennis tournaments, proshop, lessons, etc, plus a bunch of other stuff like racquetball, weights, cardio equipment, swimming pool, member bbq on Friday nights during the Summer. I had a single membership for $53 a month, and I believe tennis would be another $10 per month. You would have to check at the club.

Magwheels, I live in Oro Valley, coached Tennis at the U of A & Tucson Racquet & Fitness for years & now i'm a Realtor w/ Tierra Antigua. Public courts are minimal,1 or 2 @ Lambert Riverfront park, 6 @ IronwoodRidge HS & CDO HS(high school). Membership clubs that have a bigger group to play w/ would be EL CONQUISTADOR COUNTRY CLUB -
EL CONQUISTADOR COUNTRY CLUB - Tucson Arizona Golf. $92/month and you can play at the Resort or country club courts(26 total courts(fitness, pool, etc) golf is extra . Westward Look (Ina Rd)& Quail Valley on Oracle rd are smaller but a solid core of tennis players 3.0-4.5. The Tucson Racquet club at Price/Country club has over 1000 tennis members. Its a good place to meet a group on a regular schedule and there's players from Oro valley that may want to meet in OV.They also offer non- member clinics, friday night mixers for a reasonable fee.email Gretchen gschantz@tucsonracquetclub.com for latest newsletter Hope that helps!- Bob

Thanks all. I'm a little perplexed as to why not much tennis in Oro Valley outside of the pricey resort memberships. Looked at the Marana Senior Center and was told only 4 people play pickleball once in a while. I guess everyone else is in active adult communities or drives into Tucson?
