We are trying to figure out what it is going to cost us to move to Tucson and register 2 cars here. One is a newer 2013 Hyundai Azera - and the other is a 2004 Nissan 350Z. I've looked at the motor vehicle website, but I'm confused. We are currently living in Illinois, and only pay $108 per year for license renewal. I think AZ has a tax that you have to pay every year in addition to a yearly registration fee. Is that correct? And if so, how in the world do you figure out the tax?

We moved out here to the Tucson area from Illinois in 2011. As a point of reference, here is what we paid for our most recent vehicle registration; 2006 Ford F250, $173. 2012 Hyundai Sonata, $330. That of course is for one year. You also have to pay a nominal fee for the emission inspection here, unlike Illinois. As far as I am aware, there are no other taxes on the vehicle, except sales tax on a purchase. Auto Ins seems to be more expensive as well, as far as I can remember paying back there.

Insurance is more expensive as well, speaking from experience.

Although it has been almost 15 years since relocating to Tucson from California (Contra Costa County area), I distinctly remember both my Vehicle Registration and Insurance Premiums dropping considerably.

Don't remember the specifics for the insurance but I do remember the total registration for my 12 year old Chevy Silverado 4x4 dropped from just shy of $500 to a mere $50 and there were no "hidden" taxes or surcharges whatsoever.

As for Emission Testing . . . after the initial 5 years and if the vehicle is properly maintained, the testing is a "piece of cake" and costs a mere $12.50 every other year.

WELCOME to Tucson and Good Luck, gdsbt.

This should help.

How are my AZ vehicle registration fees calculated?

that depends on ins co. i had Allstate, coming to AZ Allstate went way up, but Geico was less than my previous Allstate.... so it really depends, have to shop around.

as for reg fees, they go down year after year until they reach a min #. vehicle inspections only occur after a # of years has gone by for newer model vehicles, or for certain uses of the vehicle. my 2006 renewal is in front of me now and it says "no emissions test required".

Thanks for all the info. I need to do some checking about insurance since my current insurance is not available in Tucson.

Geico is big here. State Farm cant even match my Geico price, and Allstate cant either even if i added auto onto my homeowners.
