It's amazing how often I see UA alumni on science documentaries; I had the good fortune to work on staff at the Lunar and Planetary Lab in the Kuiper Space Sciences building on campus while I was a UA student in the 1980's.

(In fact, Gerard Kuiper lived directly behind our place in Sam Hughes; he had already passed away, but his family kept his personal observatory dome in the back yard! He could walk to Steward Observatory on campus but he had a dome at home, too.)

While I was watching the Pluto documentary on Science Channel Wednesday night, of course, there they were: no fewer than three former LPL grad students with prominent project roles and speaking parts in the show. Marc Buie, William (Bill) McKinnon and John Spencer were the three I noticed. I was acquainted with all of them in the 1980's while we were there. We are looking so old!! What can I say. We were 30 years younger...

There are a lot of people from the UA in Science Channel documentaries; I've seen many over the years. They've gone on to careers elsewhere. Maybe the most notable one was Astronaut Dr Tom Jones. He was a wonderfully nice guy, as well, as a grad student. Super nice.

Do you have any similar experiences with Tucsonans you've known...?
