1. Does anyone know a good art framer? I bought a print at Big Horn Gallery in Tubac that's matted but not framed.

2. Does anyone know a good place to have Henckel's cooking knives sharpened?

I'm in Oro Valley if that helps....

Thank you!

Just a tip on knives. Learn to sharpen them yourself with a good set of stones. It's easy, quick, and you can sharpen them easy. I have a set of 3 stones that rotate in an oil bath that cost around $100 and will last you a lifetime. I have the slightly bigger version of this one but this is a good setup. Definitely no "Art Expert" here, Marcy . . .

However, over the years I've had good luck with custom framing for a few original oils, posters and prints at Michaels. Nothing fancy and/or exotic but good quality frames with ample selection / options at a fair price.

The one I use is on North Oracle just South of Wetmore and the Tucson Mall.

Ditto this! Also, if you don't have one yet get a Henckels honing steel of same quality or better as your knife set. Henckels has about three different quality levels of their knives. (forged, stamped etc.) A few swipes on the honing steel before use makes a huge difference too. Good basic maintenance between the more in depth sharpening. Whatever you do, if you have quality knives don't give them to someone that is going to "sharpen" them on a grinder.

My mother had a few things framed at Aaron Brothers at the Foothills Mall. They almost always have a sale sheet in the Sunday Daily Star and it often has discounts on framing. Custom framing is expensive everywhere, so coupons help a bit.

Thank you, Ken and Rick!! I've seen the Henkel's stones, but I kind of thought maybe they were a gimmick. Now, I will definitely look into stones.

My knives have names like Cronidur, Friodur, and mostly Fine Edge. Most are about 20+ years old. I'm glad I read Rick's "no grinder" because my daughter suggested a ChefPro electric grinder/sharpener, and I was close to ordering one from Amazon.

Bummer, I never thought of Michaels. Duh. I will also check Aarons!

Thanks, everyone!

Before real estate I had spent many many years in the supermarket industry. No matter what part of the country I may be in, the butchers in the meat department had the three stone oil system that Ken linked to for sharpening knives. The honing steel I mentioned does not actuallly "sharpen" a knife it's purpose is to straighten the edge and rid it of small imperfections. Both are easy to do yourself and a small investment for a life time of having sharp knives to cook with. Here is a video on how to use a honing steel.henckels honing steel video - Bing Videos Find one of those 20% off coupons from Bed Bath and Beyond and get yourself a good Henckels or Wustoff honing steel to go along with the sharpening stones. You can do it!

FWIW, Marcy . . . Michael's frequently / almost always has 50% sales on Custom Framing.
