I've found the whole white/Anglo/Hispanic thing confusing. For instance, only a few months ago I was visiting at a friend's home in Nogales AZ. My friend is a federal agent with the Customs and Border Protection. I mentioned to her my confusion over the issue and put my arm next to hers. We are the same color. Yet, I'm and Anglo and she's a Hispanic. She laughed and said I wouldn't understand.

OK, I don't understand.

Well "hispanic," which refers to ethnicity rather than "white" which refers to race, means "of Spanish origin." Spanish people are generally speaking, and speaking in terms of race, "white" people.

Now in the vernacular we tend (especially here in the Southwest) to refer to all South and Central Americans as simply "hispanic" when in fact it's a very diverse group of people with diverse racial roots. In keeping with that, hispanic people identify themselves in a number of ways, for example as "White or Caucasian" or as "Native American" or other races in smaller numbers.

The US government considers Hispanic/Latino as white/Caucasian. They are no longer a "Race." 18 years ago when my wife came here (to the US -- she is Brazilian) there was a place on all of the forms along with white, native american called Hispanic non Latino and Latino. She has always identified as Latino. Now Hispanic and Latino isn't on any government forms and if you look it up is says that Hispanic/Latino is the same and is white/Caucasian.

I think it is another way for them to try to minimize the impact of the Hispanic/Latino people in this country. If you say that they are white/Caucasian there is less of a problem with the illegal population.

"Hispanic" is a linguistic term, IMO (regardless of this or that govt definition. I believe techinically "Hispanic" is considered an "ethno-linguistic" term.

People from Spain are Hispanic. (Spanish Language). Also obviously, the Latin American countries (exluding Brazil).

Latin means from Latin America.

A Latin can be pale white to coal black. Same with a Hispanic.
