Hey all!

I'm checking out Cochise county at the beginning of November. I'll be looking for a place to 1. live with my husband and baby and 2. start up a business. My dream is to work from home, on a ranch where I can put a fiber mill - which processes raw sheep's wool and alpaca fiber (among other things) into yarn, roving(for people who spin yarn by hand), felt, etc. I'd like to have an on-site yarn shop and host classes/knit nights and stuff.

So, I'm wondering where all the knitters/crocheters/weavers/crafters are in Cochise county! I'm debating being up close to the I-10 so it's not difficult for visitors to find me. But I also really love the scenery around the places like Hereford/south of Sierra Vista.

Are there pretty, green areas like that near Vail, Benson or Wilcox? Or do I have to trade scenery for business?

There are a lot of agricultural artisans in southern Arizona; I don't know about the fiber angle, but this magazine covering southern Arizona might give you ideas of the kind of things that are being done in agriculture arts. Also you could probably glean ideas on the terrain and climate in various areas from the other agriculturalists. I've located the edition about UNESCO designating Tucson the first International City of Gastronomy in the US. Wish you the best!

Thanks for the interesting article, Wilma. I'll check out the others!

I am going for the fiber angle because I have a passion for knitting/crocheting etc. I know there are many people raising alpaca in hobby farms in SE AZ. I'm not as sure about sheep but I'm sure they're out there *somewhere* because Arizona produces upwards of 600k lbs of wool annually.

The Cokelys own/operate an Alpaca/LLama ranch in J-Six just along the side of I-10 west of Benson. You may want to contact them for info. John is a very nice guy. He put in our well (he has a well-drilling business as well as the farm. Check out their website.
