I lived in Tucson in 1976-78 when the city was relatively small. Jobs were scarce in those years, but the climate from Sept-June is unbeatable. Even summer days are 5-7 degrees cooler than Phoenix, due to Tucson's higher elevation. Smog was also a rarity compared to the daily morning brown cloud in Phoenix.
Today, rents are considerably less than many US cities; this has been the case for decades. Some of the surrounding towns would also make good retirement or living areas. Another bonus is the presence of nearby Mt. Lemmon (9159 feet elev.) for summer & winter activities. Many interesting venues exist both inside and outside the metro area.

Have you been back since 1978? Things have really changed! You were there four years before The Tucson Mall was in existence. It has since expanded and drawn in more nearby shopping east of Stone on Wetmore. That's just a small sampling of all the change The Old Pueblo has undergone though. Check out the Tucson of the 60s 70s and 80s thread.
