I'm talking world-wide - but even in the US, how many folks are sickened and killed because of flies? We don't really have a way to know, but we do know that they carry a LOT of deseases. I would venture there are a LOT more health issues and deaths caused by flies than by rattlesnakes, spiders and scorpions combined (even here in the US).

Thats hard to say, really. Flies Im sure are responsible for many deaths, but if they are, its never reported. As far as worldwide statistics, I dont think flies, etc, kill more than snakes/scorpions/spiders. Each year 10s of thousands of people die from scorpion stings and upwards of 50K die from snake bites.

Think not?

1.7-2.5 MILLION deaths from malaria alone (Malaria: Statistics). This is 1996 estimates, but the numbers are still high even today.

More recent info:

"Worldwide, an estimated 300 to 500 million clinical cases of malaria occur each year, resulting in an estimated one million deaths annually in Africa alone."
Source is National Istitute of Health - Statement on Africa Malaria Day 2006, April 25, 2006 News Release - National Institutes of Health (NIH)

50 K is nothing compared to the havoc flies, mozzies, fleas and roaches create.

PS - as you say, there is no way to really know how many deaths flies bring about, but considering how prevalent they are and the types of things they like to hang around, it's pretty good guess that they make a LOT of people sick or even die.

Thanks for the info. I know malaria is a huge killer, but didnt know it was still that bad. So yes, youre correct, mosquitos kill more every year than snakes, but snakes are far less numerous than mosquitos, and avoid humans, unlike mosquitos. But still, snakes kill 125K a year, which is an astronomically high number.

Yeah, certainly snakes kill a lot of folks (especially overseas) - and I wasn't intending to minimize that fact - of the danger that they can pose, just point out that outside of Man, the most truly dangerous creatures are those that you'd least expect.

Even in today's world, insect-borne disease is a terrible problem. In fact, disease and starvation are Mother Natures' main tools in maintaining a balanced population of any kind of living thing - from the lowliest worm up to and including Mankind.
Something we forget at our own peril.

Id agree. Thats why you all need to leave the snakes alone! They eat rodents which carry diseases.
