It was those 100's in April that sent me into my summer sleep schedule early, thinking it was going to be this way until September. Miscalculation.

I've lived in Tucson for more than 40 years. Hitting 100 in April usually portends a very hot summer. While we've had a little respite in the past week or so, what lies ahead is a long stretch of heat that will last well into October or even November.

The forecast for this week's Tucson temperatures: 98, 102, 104, 106, 103, 102, 100. June temps will jump another 10 degrees.

Time to leave for the summer!

Leave? Easier said than done (safely) at this coronavirus time. The two prior summers I took a flight to Germany in May and stayed until September / October. No such luck this year. The coronavirus risk on a 13-14 hour airplane flight and transiting through the airports is still too high for my 65 year old comfort zone. I have a permanent resident card for Germany so they will let me in, but I would have to self-quarantine for two weeks after arrival.

So for now, I get up real early for bike riding or errands, and avoid going outdoors in the afternoon. My apartment until now has stayed pretty comfortable. It faces mostly north, so does not get sun baked. I usually wait until 5-6 pm to turn on the AC for a few hours. Ceiling fans do a pretty good job when the AC is off, and at least I have been able to open the screen door in the morning hours for fresh air.

Time to leave for the summer!
Option! Enjoy our glorious mornings in AZ, have dinner at 9-10am, take your sleep meds, sleep until 7-8pm, and take a glorious cool walk at 2-3am, or take a glorious bike ride at that hour, after you've had lunch, and at that hour, there's little or no traffic, safest time of the day to take a bike ride.

That's how I've survived 17 summers in Las Vegas, and going on 2 here in Tucson.

In my 55+ community there's 3 more of us that do that, except they cut it off at around 5am. So at any hour of the morning, I can drop by their house or they can drop by my house.

Remember, if you even head to MN, MI or Iowa you could potentially face some very cruel, high humidity and heat days in the middle of summer. I remember one summer in Minneapolis, and it hit 103 one summer day, and me with no A/C in my apartment.

I've lived here all year long since the early 80's. Any mention of 1989 strikes dread here. I heard it mentioned this month....

We have a place in coastal Washington, which is pretty perfect in the summer. Whether we drive up or decide to risk a non-stop 3 hour flight, we haven't decided yet.

Brrrrr…………….

When I got outside last night at 9pm, I thought: It's going to be a chilly one tonite! Rather than walk my ferret at 3am I walked him at midnight with a light coat on! I usually spend the rest of the nite/morning outside on my deck watching DVD's/reading or doing crossword puzzles. I may just need to dig out the space heater tonite/morning, and a sweater.

Should I cover up my plants?

Perhaps my friend in Arkansas is right, we're going into global cooling, while the North Pole melts.

Day trippers won't be able to relate to this! I think I started my summer sleep schedule too early this year!

I went for a 38 mile bicycle ride from the east side of Tucson down Spanish Trail to Vail starting well before 5 am. It was cool and crisp, around 66F/18C. I had a long sleeve shirt on, and could have used a T-shirt under for an extra layer. It was refreshing. I got home before 8 am, and it was warming up into the mid 70s F. I have the sliding patio door wide open now, and probably won't turn on the ceiling fan till this afternoon.

My apartment faces north / northwest, with some big mesquite trees to block most of the late afternoon sun. Up until now, I have not turned on AC until 4 or 5 pm, and I shut off the AC around 8:30 pm. The ceiling fan runs all afternoon and evening.

The air blowing out of my evap cooler this morning read 46°F on the thermometer. That was on the low setting. Crazy times.
