This is the first time in my 7 years in Green Valley that I have seen a haboob (dust storm). It was followed by heavy winds and rain, then thunder and lightning! I'll let you know when I know how much rain we got. I am guessing 3 or 4 tenths, but could be more by midnight!

Holy cow, that haboob has to be a first for Green Valley. It looked huge! Really spectacular filming, Bart. Very dramatic to see coming from the distance. Thank you for letting me see one of these up close. Glad you got rain afterward which hopefully helped settle the dust (I wonder where exactly it originated?). Great job with this video!!

Thanks for watching and your comment wildflowers27! People who have been here 40 years and longer are telling me that they do not remember anything like this previously. Occasionally we get a little dust blowing off the mine tailings, but nothing like this for sure! I am really glad you enjoyed the video and your front row seat view of the event! Yes, the rain seemed to clear the air pretty quickly, so that was a very good thing! It sure looked to me like the haboob originated from downdrafts from a thunderstorm over the Santa Rita's. It appears that what I captured was the southern end of the haboob. I know it extended off to the north, but I am not sure how far. I feel pretty confident that Sahuarita was impacted as well, I just don't know how much further north was impacted! Thanks for watching and your comment!

I've been here for almost 39 years and we never had a haboob during that time, until now.
It didn't cross the Sierritas so we just got very high winds. Apparently it went north through Tucson to the Catalinas.
Thanks for posting the video of it.

Thanks for your comment Windwalker2. I am hearing similar things from other long time residents. This leads me to believe we all witnessed a pretty rare event for this part of Arizona. I am really glad I captured it on video! You are welcome for the video!

Good video. The storms developed over Vail so we didn't really see the haboob, the sky just looked strange off the the west. But man was the wind blowing I mean I thought I was going to lose roof tiles and I was scared for the trees. It was a nice start to a real monsoon season. The forecast looks good for at least a normal monsoon. I doubt we will get a repeat of 2018 where it was green from July thru September. but it's a start.

Hey, thanks for that info Andy! Can you elaborate a bit about the storms that developed over Vail? Were these winds just massive downdrafts from thunderstorms that came down, hit the ground and spread in all directions, or were these straight line winds? Just curious. BTW, glad you did not have significant damage to your property!

I would be really happy with a "normal" monsoon season. The last two have been really disappointing! I have high hopes for storms next week!

What's curious to me is almost no coverage in the news about this epic haboob/dust storm. Your video shows a massive miles-wide wall of dust that obscures the sky -- something no one recalls seeing in this area. Yet the local Green Valley News talked about the downed trees, wind, and overturned port-a-potties at a Quail Creek construction site, but no mention of the haboob that loomed in the sky.

I wanted to hear more first-hand accounts from locals on what it was like. They said about half of Green Valley lost power. Did yours go out, Bart? If there are going to be more of these, I want to learn about them and how to prepare. Your videos and reporting has been the most comprehensive and informative, so thank you!

It looks like we are getting our wish those storms last night were spectacular.

The storms did not "develop" over Vail (that was the wrong description) they developed from a line from Sierra Vista to the Dragoons/Texas Canyon and pushed nortwestward, but there was no dust that far east because the Rincons and higher terrain are covered in vegetation and grassland. By the time the storms were kicking up dust in your video the storms were already over Vail thus we didn't see the approaching wall of dust.

You definitely got the best seat in the house. Get ready for more storms tonight. Already a cell near Vail and over Mt Lemmon and the Rincons.

straight line winds are caused by massive downdrafts so both technically. From the NOAA:

Damaging winds are often called “straight-line” winds to differentiate the damage they cause from tornado damage. Strong thunderstorm winds can come from a number of different processes. Most thunderstorm winds that cause damage at the ground are a result of outflow generated by a thunderstorm downdraft.

It is really odd to note what the "news" chooses to cover. I would have thought it was a big deal, but I guess others did not think so. Fortunately, I did not lose power, but around midnight, I lost Cox internet, and it was not restored until around 10 the next morning for me. I am glad I happened to be watching the weather and caught the GV haboob on video so I could share it with all. Thanks for the kind words!!!
