I realize that sometimes your job, or school, or something else can delay one from living where they'd like to. I hope you find your way out of here soon. Life's too short to remain in a place that you dislike so.
I hate the desert and am stuck here because of my fiances work and her parents desire for her to stay, but not all of my problems with this place are desert related, so I'll offer a few suggestions. That would make this place more acceptable.

1. Improve timing of traffic lights. The amount of time it takes to travel anywhere in this town is a joke and the frustration makes it not worthwhile. There is no reason why with the exception of rush hour it should take me more than 20 minutes to travel 8-10 miles in this town. I have not been able to find a route that does this in less than half an hour. If I have to make one right or left turn on major roads, I have to wait through 3-4 lights. The infrastructure here is really sad.

2. Spread out bus stops. With the exception of those who are handicapped, Sun Tran stopping every 1/4 of a mile in the center of town. Its annoying and healthy people should be able to walk 1/4 of a mile in this heat.

3. More parks, and parks of better quality. The closest park I live near is 2 miles away, so I have to get in my car drive for 15 minutes (so a half hour round trip) and sit through 5 lights just to get there, and there is really only 2 good parks to take your dogs. Udall is a joke. It would be fine to go to school grounds to take my dogs to play, but most are fenced off and gated under lock and key. I never saw this in Michigan, kinda sad.

4. Availability of water, like I said, I hate the desert, but I like hiking. I could actually enjoy hiking if I didn't need to carry a gallon of water everywhere in order to prevent dehydration, and it is so dry in the winter that you still need at least 2-3 quarts for a 2 hour hike and camelbacks just cause your back to be a river of sweat. Same thing with Cycling, the forest service just needs to put a few large coolers where water can be filled up and replace them frequently. not a difficult task, but very possible, plus it'd just be smart because of all the morons that go hiking underprepared.

5. Solar power. Why the city doesn't mandate that all new construction must have some solar power built in is beyond me. Its short sighted.

6. A few more public pools and available during night hours. I work the night shift, and work long hours, I'd love to be able to go for a swim and not have to stay up until the wee hours of the morning.

7. Better enforcement of bike laws: when I'm riding in the bike lane and concentrating on what I'm doing, I do not need some moron in an SUV getting right up behind me and blasting his horn or sticking his head out of his window and yelling in my ear, I've almost wrecked on half a dozen occasions because of this. I would get Liscense numbers and call it in but I feel TPD would just be a waste of my time.

8. Road repairs, why in the name of God why does it take just as long as MI to get road repairs done. Is it because the city is that cheap or the state? There are nowhere near as many weather constraints. Every time I go by the I-10 I don't see any work done. I don't understand this.

9. Daylight savings time in summer. Lets get with the rest of the country. I don't need it to be daylight at 4:30-5:00 and 95-100 degrees by 7:00 in the morning during summer, however that extra hour of light in the evening would be nice so I can walk my dogs while the sun is setting.

It is difficult to enjoy things with such poor infrastructure that makes getting to an activity just as long as the activity itself, and the constant stop start of Sun Tran can almost make one vomit from the nausea. While most attractions are overpriced (which reflects the overpriced and inflated cost of living because of the retirees moving here) the things I should be able to enjoy almost become chores.

Cool it!

Pretty much agree with you on each account, except
8. The city is just stupid, if you drive up to Phoenix, nearly every street is maintained. Tucson was going to build a cross town freeway a few decades ago, but instead the city politicans decided to shore up their base with a Cesar Chavez museum.

Also on your 1, have you noticed all the crosswalks around the city? Have you noticed that nearly all of them are within about 100ft of an intersection? Why you stop 6 lanes of traffic for one person is beyond me. It only serves to exacerbate the obesity problem in this city, increase commutes, and burn more fuel.

I have an idea! Why don't all of you well-meaning, ultra-bored, ex-Tucson-lovers get together and plan an evening or more at the city council meetings where you guys can present your list of "ideas".
If you're just venting, that's understandable, but you may wanna go there and kick a little mayoral and council-dude rump as well.
Make sure you not only direct your statements to the city fathers & mothers, but the planning and zoning brainiacs could use some of your wisdom, too.
Hey, and remember to reserve a few prepared words for those nimbys as well. Gotta love them nimbys!
Or, you may just wanna move some place where no problems exist, like Phoenix!

Default Boring City

I was forced to move here in the Fall of 2007 because of my job. I have given it 9 months, and can definetly say it is the most boring metro area of 1 million people I've known.

People who like Tucson:
1. College Students
2. 65+
3. Hippies of all ages

If you're anyone but the above, stay where you are! I came from a "rust belt" city back east, and this place doesn't even compare to that!! Where is the music scene, happy hours, art, festivals, restaurant/bar scene? Big deal, you can hike!! Dont get me going about the school system and the crazy political views people around here have!! And if you go South of River you are pretty much in Mexico!!

Extremely disappointed!! Can't wait to get out of here! To Anywherelseville!!!!

Default Well......

I actually really like the weather here. A 10 mile commute in Colorado can take two hours in the winter time. I just can't believe how disgusting the people are here. Trash everywhere. If you go mountain biking in the hills or hiking there is always some weirdo shooting guns off, illegals running around everywhere, not to mention the the drug runners. As a cyclist I love the year 'round riding weather but my God the people are gross here. It's funny, everyone I know in Colorado has crashed in a snow storm and everyone in I know Tucson has had something stolen from them. Oh well, at least the weather is nice. But, were as I miss the heck out of Colorado I doubt if I ever leave Tucson I will even remember it even exists.

It's realitive in my opinion.

Personaly I live in a small West Texas town...if you ever watched the series Black Gold on Tru Tv or Friday Night Lights, thats it. Tucson is a live and lush forest compared to my part of the world. Anyhow, I've been in Tucson over a month and love it. So far I've went hiking a Canyon up around Sadona and started taking up BlackJack lessons over at the Desert Diamond Casino. The only thing that bothers me I guess is the car scene. My truck is Supercharged and my car is Turbocharged. There is a couple of places people hang out but it's just a handful. It's crazy, there is more people hanging out in my small town than Tucson. But dispite that there is still other things like catching a movie. There is like 5 theaters in town which works out great for me. They have showtimes starting out earlier than back home as well as later. So I have a good chance of finidng a time slot for something I want to see. There is atleast two of these theaters located inside some pretty nice shoping malls as well.

As for The People's Republic of California. I spent a little time there and those people are twisted. I'm not talking about your general public but their politics. You got people like none other than Rambo him self, Sylvester Stallone is trying to strip away people's Second Amendment rights. As a ferm believer in our God given Constitutional rights, I have as issue with that. George Washington once said, the Second Amendment is second only to the Constitution...it's gives it teeth. I also enjoy fast cars as stated above. CARB, California's emssion group is nutty'er than a fruit cake. It's illegal to mod your car. They actually train cops in some parts to spot aftermarket parts on a car...under the hood. You have some mods that actually improve the effciency of a motor that in turns improves emessions. Then lets not forget about those evil street racers whose cars was crushed. It's true some people has been killed but nothing compared to those related to Aclohol. In 2006 there was 1509 DWI related deaths in the State of California and some 40,000-70,000 nation wide. There is an estimated 135 Street racing related deaths a year nation wide. Califnoria is about like the rest of the country when it comes to DUI/DWIs. You can get a little jail time or a LIC supession but don't worry about your car being crushed. Anyhow, I could go on forever about California but I want. It's a great place to visit but I was born free.

What's this? A whole nine (9) months in Tucson, and you're all ready to bolt outta here? Hoowee, dude... you're good to go!

And you paint with a very wide brush as well.

I ain't no college student... I'm not 65 plus... I certainly ain't no "hippy"... or at least I don't have the obligatory grey pony tail like many do.

I sincerely hope (for your sake) that there is a very nice and beautiful utopia out there somewhere for you. Complete with wonderful politics, music scene, happy hours, art, festivals, restaurant, bar scene, etc.

Oh, yeah... and, hey... no Mexico South of the River.

There has to be one, right?

Ditto,

I'm half that age...it's been years since college...and unless they changed hippy to include someone who loves burgers, Comics, firearms, and Hotrods, you can probaly count me out of that group as well.

Anyhow, you may want to check out Phoenix if you're really into the night life and traffic jams.
