Hi Everyone, I have a friend visiting from the East Coast who is part Native American. She is very interested in exploring Native American cultural areas, sites or events (not casinos!) in the greater Tucson area. My research online hasn't really revealed anything that looks promising. Does anyone have any ideas on where we might go? Thanks.

Can't help you with the Tucson area, but if you venture north, my all-time favorite is the Hopi Indian Reservation!

We were just down at the Amerind Museum a few weeks ago in the Dragoons. It was a lovely museum and location. Also, the Heard Museum in Phoenix is incredible.

The Arizona State Museum on the campus of Univ. of AZ in Tucson has excellent exhibits on Native American culture and peoples in AZ.

The vast Tohono O'dham Nation is west of Tucson along of Hiway 86 towards Ajo. The Tohono O'odham Nation Culture Center and Museum is worth a visit, but may still be closed due to Corona restrictions in the Tohono Nation.

Did you know there were ballcourts in ancient Tucson?!! You can hike to them at Catalina Park in the northern area of Tucson. It's not a long hike. Also, there are elevated platforms to the south. I haven't been to those yet. At Agua Caliente Park in the eastside of town you can see a small display of items found in pit houses at the park. They may not be open currently due to Covid, however, so check that. The pit houses were dug into the soil and they found shelves carved into the walls. It seems they kept displays on their shelves like a modern home! They found beautiful animal bones and carvings. The museum on the university campus, mentioned above, is excellent. Also, visit the Arizona Historical Society. They have many items on display and they explain pit house construction. At Colossal Cave to the southeast you can see a small display case of pipes and such found in the cave. On hot days they went caving! If you travel in any direction you will find lots of Native information and fun things! I've left out about twenty other things in the area that I've been to. Hope that gets you started.

Your friend might also be interested in the Casa Grande Ruins, about an hour's drive from Tucson:

I would bite the bullet and drive north. Montezuma's Castle and the ruins at Canyon de Chelly are not to be missed. They are both incredible!
