We had some unattended baby quail show up near our front porch this morning. I guess they heard voices and came to them. They hung around the porch for 5 hours, and we never saw a parent quail. It looked like they were dying to me. We have a bathroom remodel going on, so lots of people going in and out the front door. I was afraid they may get stepped on and their short lives would be wasted. I did not want that to happen. I called Tucson Wildlife Center, https://tucsonwildlife.com/ and they offered to look for a volunteer who could come to pick them up, but there was no guarantee. I also posted the situation on NextDoor and I got a couple of offers for help from there which I greatly appreciated! Tucson Wildlife Center called back and told me that a volunteer named Julia offered to come to Green Valley from Tucson to pick up the chicks. Julia texted me asking for my address which I sent, and I asked her if she wanted me to round up the chicks and get them in a box with a towel, and she said yes. She also asked if I could meet her part way to save some time, and we agreed to meet at the Green Valley Pecan Factory parking lot where we would make the exchange. I called Keith and Petra (my neighbors) to see if they would be willing to help with the baby quail, and they said yes. Keith and Petra have helped me with the rescue of a Gila Monster caught in a pack rat trap, and the rescue of a pair of baby doves in a nest on a piece of equipment at work that was going to be moved, and the nest most likely destroyed. I love these guys, they are awesome neighbors and friends!!! I had gotten one of the baby quail in the box before Petra showed up, and we quickly rounded up three others. At one time I know we had seen 5 babies, so Keith and Petra went looking around the side of the house and Keith heard a peep, and Petra spotted the 5th baby and got it to the box. I can't believe they still answer their phone when they see my number come up!!! I'll let you watch the rest!!!

Thank you so much to you and Petra and Keith and Julie for saving these adorable baby quail!! Amazing they are so tiny and fully feathered and can get around at one day old! I liked what Julie said about the bed they'll have at the Tucson Wildlife Center with a heater and a feather duster hanging over them. All of you are angels - thank you!

Thanks for the kind words wildflowers27, I will pass them along to Keith and Petra! Julia sent me a text just a while ago to let me know that all 5 chicks were doing well and she sent me a pic. I tried to attach it, I hope it worked.

I'm glad you were able to save them. I wonder what happened to their mother?

Me too Windwalker2! I could not just stand by and let their one day lives end without trying to do something. Thankfully, between my neighbors and Tucson Wildlife Center, those 5 quail babies will have a chance to live! I have no idea what happened to the parents. I really did not want to interfere but after several hours of the babies running around the area (probably looking for Mom), they started laying down in the gravel, and at one point, I thought a couple of them were dead, one had ants crawling on it. Anyhow, I am glad they have a second chance!!!
