Every home is different, all according to square footage. And yes in the summer its all day and nite. My family lives in the Phoenix area and they all have different electric bills and they leave the airconditioner on 7-8 months out of the year.

I'm moving to Tucson this week, and when I investigated electricity charges for the apartment I'm moving into I was told by Tucson Electric Company that the average monthly charges for the apt I'm moving into (when the previous tenant was there) was around $45 a month.

Now, I've heard that alot of apartments in Tucson run on "Universal Air Conditioning" which is basically like a wall thermostat/ which you can adjust.
....I was concerned about the electric bills as well, especially since I have a pug dog who requires air conditioning in the summer all day long (even when I"M not home) so I know I'll be using up alot of juice on A.C...
That is how the air conditioning situation was explained to me by a Tucsonian once...I would think they would need to find some economical way such as this to accomodate folks,,,,106 degrees summer days are not uncommon there, and I can't imagine people paying $200 a month for A.C..or something crazy like that...no one would want to live there!
This is all I know...maybe other people here have more information to help you.
Amy

It's going to depend on the square footage of your home, whether and how many "zones" you have in the house, and how well the house is insulated (windows, walls, etc). Also how cold you want it and which direction your living space is facing (if it's South facing with no window treatments, it will be a lot more than if the South facing portion of the home is toward a bedroom and you leave the shades down during the hot part of the day...). There is a huge variation depending on all that.

I can tell you that our home there had 2 zones--one for the bedrooms and one for the living area. I set the thermostat so that the bedrooms went up to 80 in the day, and down to 72 at night. I set the living area at 80 during the day as well (I lvoe heat), but my husband was constantly lowering it to about 70 so we kind of battled on that one At night it went to 80. The back of the house was South-facing, but it had a covered patio, so the sun did not beat directly on the windows (this is key!!). It was a new house with very good insulation and windows. It was 3600 square feet. At the worst of the summer heat, we paid about $150/month. In winter we paid nothing for a/c, and very little for heat as it didn't typically get very cold.

When I lived in Maine, before Tucson, I would pay up to $400/month for heating (an old farmhouse) so I think it's quite a bargain!

Be sure to see where the sun will hit during the day...this is something people who are not from AZ tend not to think about, but if the sunning is streaming directly into the house all summer your bills will be WAY higher. And in the case of bills (though not necessarily charm), newer is better.

I moved into the Golf Villas over the summer and my electric bill was about 175-200 a month...yes, I had to keep it nice and comfortable for the pugs...I left it at about 72....except on the few days it hit over 108...then it went down to 70.

Default Great idea to remember...

...about where your windows/sliding glass doors when the sun rises & sets....

Similar situation in FL....our average bill on our apt here runs $60...summer or winter....but our SGD's face East & just one little window west, w/setting of sun....

That positioning does make a difference; if we move, I have to remember that for AZ!

We run our AC 24 hours a day. We keep it at 70 during the day and 65 at night. It will be on from now thru August. Our house is 1750 sq ft. Our summer bills are $300 per month, but you save a lot during the winter when heating is next to nothing. We planned our house so that we only have one window to the west and that is glass block with a shade. (bathroom) All our south side windows are shaded. The majority of our windows are on the North side. NOW, HERE IS THE BEST THING THAT WE HAVE EVER DONE: We had ALL the windows covered with window tint. It costs about $1200 if you do it off-season. Our AC bills dropped about $45 per month! Something to consider.
