The state sales tax combines with county, special things like jails, freeways, and city rates to average over 8% in most places. Hotels and rental cars etc get hit even higher to pay for the many sports venues that have been built here. The state tax does not apply to food and some cities also waive the sales tax on food. There are all sorts of exemptions etc for favored industries and occupations, but figure 8% or so on just about everything. Auto are taxed at very high rates compared to other places. You can expect to pay 500 or more per year for a late model SUV and several thousand if you own an expensive RV.

The good news is that property tax rates and income tax rates are relatively low. The tax structure favors those with high income and expensive homes. For middle and upper income people, AZ ranks as one of the cheaper states when it comes to taxes.

Smile Sales Tax

Remember you will pay sales tax on clothing out here also. Plus I recall that you are moving to OV. Oro Valley also has a 2cent sales tax, so we pay 8.1 or something like that.
Also be aware that OV has just passed a utility tax, its low, but its the principal.
Eventually our town of OV will be passing some type of property tax also in my opinon, especially since the town council keeps giving sales tax money away to developers, in the form of economic agreements.
If you like a Wal Mart(we don't) the new big shopping center on Oracle and Tangerine is slated for a wal mart super size or whatever they call it. Developer promised us a upscale shopping center, unique stores, etc, so what is coming freakin Wal Mart and for that the developer is getting 23 million in sales tax revenue , gift from us citizens courtesy of our town council.
Arizona is not a cheap place to live in our opinion, but cheaper or more reasonable then a lot of states, especially n.j.!!!
Also from what I know Pima county property tax is higher then Maricpoa, not sure why.
