Finally I have a good shot at moving back to good ole' Az. I am military so it's pretty hard to get where you want to go, I find out next week If I get to move here or not.

Any of you live on or work on DMAFB? How is the base housing there? Should I just get an off base house/apt?

I was stationed at Davis-Monthan back in the early 1990s. I was there from 1991 until 1994. I got out of the AF and went to the University of Arizona, where I graduated.

Tucson was in my top 5 of places to be stationed. I loved my time there. While at Davis-Monthan, I lived in the dorms on base for a couple of years, then moved off base. I was enlisted (airman), so I didn't have the base housing experience. But, I did house sit for quite a few sergeants and some officers, and the housing stock is pretty drab overall. Some nicer areas where high ranking officers live, but mostly, it's typical base housing.

Off base, it is a good idea to stay away from the housing north of base from 22nd and 29th streets. It's a somewhat crime-ridden area with some unattractive blocks. Look to the areas north of Broadway if you can.

My oldest daughter and her dh were stationed here for a year while he trained (and unfortunatley washed out) of the A-10's. They didn't have kids then, so they just lived in an apartment near the base. I wish I could remember where, but I don't have that address book anymore. I'm thinking it was west or SW of the base. That was in 1998. Now, they're 4 kids later, 9 bases later, now headed to Papa, Hungary where he's the Lt. Col. in charge of the C-17's (After Luke and the F-16's, Enid and the B-1's, he finally found a plane that fits his style). But, they're renting a house in town as there's no base, per se. No commissary, housing, no BX, no movie theater, pool (well, the town has some of the most fabulous swimming complexes in all Europe), nothing a US base would have. They leave next week. Kellie keeps saying, "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Toto." :-) The kids will be immersed in the local Catholic Hungarian school, which should be fun to watch, but there is a Wal-Mart like place somewhat near them called Tesco, so they'll do fine!

Yeah, it is. They tried to find a Rosetta Stone, but couldn't. I gave them an English/Hungarian dictionary, but it wasn't really good on pronounciations. I also gave them a Hungarian etiquette book as her kids are super, majorly wild and crazy. Could be an interesting 3 years!
